I'm having trouble starting my '89 f250, 7.3. The Wait To Start light comes on for about 10 seconds, but there is no clicking afterwards and the ammeter gauge doesn't jump like it used to. I just changed the glow plug relay, but still does the same thing. Any idea? Also seems to pull the battery down.
check your ground from the glow plug controller. It is a black wire bolted to the intake manifold, usually. It could also be the glow plugs. check them with a test light. Instructions are in the top two threads. Yours is the newer system. Post up results if you get them.
I get 12-13 volts at the battery side before I turn the key on, then it drops to about 7 volts when I turn the key on. Took the black wires off going to the glow plugs, and get the same results, so don't think it's the gp. Unhooked the 2 yellow wires on the battery side and the yellow wire on the "Z' strap and when I turn the key on, still get over 9 volts on both terminals even with the battery wires disconnected. Where's that juice coming from? Any ideas?
When I changed my glow plug relay the auto store gave me a starter relay and told me it was a glow plug relay. I didn't realize it till I compared it to the original and the copper studs were different. Make sure you replaced it with a GPR and not a starter relay
I took the boot connector off the front gp, drivers side (easiest to get to) and turned the key on and it seemed to cycle OK, with it off, so removed that gp and checked it with the battery charger (neg on threads and positve on connector end) and it heated right up. Put it back in and tried it again and the wts light was on for a while and it cycled like it's supposed to. Still won't start, but I think I ran the battery down so not spinning real fast. Don't know why it wouldn't cycle before, but after unhooking the glow plug and reinserting it, now seems OK. I put in a new relay and Beru gps about 3 years ago, and haven't had to plug it in since. Also new batteries about that time, but maybe they are getting weak now.
