i just bought a 1991 ford f150 4x4 with the EFI 4.9 with a 3" body lift and 33" tires and to say the least it lacks in the power department, aside from upgrading to taller gears, is there anything i can thats minimally invasive in order to increase power? i was going to buy a header but i was reading how they leak a lot and don't fit in models with 4x4 & a/c. do they make intake's more flow-friendly and efficient for this engine? is there anything else i can do? thanks, Josh
As far as I know, there's not a ton of things that you can do with that engine. If you had a carb'ed engine, that'd be different. But, unless I've missed something, many mods that can be done on a carbureted engine can't be done on an EFI engine, as they mess with the computer too much.
Since you already have EFI manifolds, I'd stick with them. They're basically shorty headers. You could probably go with a mild cam. But I wouldn't get one that's too radical, because I've heard that radical cams can screw with the computer. If you're willing to get some machine work done, look into getting your head ported and polished, although I'm not sure if this will conflict with the computer. Some research would have to be done on that.
Intake/head ported, possibly shave the head a hair, new cam ( and as stated, not to wild of a grind because the computer will basically scream F it), advance the timing-It's free and really opens potential....
Those 33's take up some power especially if they're low on air. I put on Livewires platinum plugs an MSD ignition blaster Air Hog air filter a 2.5 cat back exhaust with a Flowmaster muffler and an electric radiator cooling fan, synthetic oil in the engine and rear end. It's quicker than it was and has more hill pulling power but those new Shelby stangs still eat my lunch.
