I'm not sure if you realize it but you already have door locks on your truck if you have the stock door bolt mechanisms.

I don't recall if you have the outside door lock on your drivers side or not, but you certainly must on the passenger side.

To use the mechanical locks on the doors, you push the inside handle forward (clockwise on the drivers side and counterclockwise on the passenger side) and the bolts mechanically lock.

To get out and lock the doors (LOL) you flip the drivers handle clockwise, then slide out the passenger side door, close it and lock it with the key.

No key? You can get one made or have the lock rekeyed to match your ignition switch (if it's still original) for about $25!

Just one thing I remember on my '49 is the inside and out side lock mechanisms are not tide together.. Do not pull up on the lock of the passengers side door and close it thinking y0u can unlock it with the key. Or you may be

you cannot lock yourself out of these trucks. If you lock it from the inside and shut the door it will unlock itself.

I learned this the hard way when trying to lock my drivers door, since i do not have the 5 star package on my 52, i just flipped up the handle closed the door and was on my way, i came back (forgetting that i had locked it) opened it up and got in, puzzled that it opened I got out and tried it several times. With the same result of it just pushing the inside handle down, Which i guess is a good design.

I have locks on both sides and no keys, when I got my truck the outside passenger door handle didn't work but the inside handle worked , after I removed the key cylinder to paint the door I realized that it had been lock the whole time. So if its locked with the key it can be opened and closed from inside and I guess you could be locked out that way...

The inside and outside locks are two completely different and seperate mechanisms.

The inside lock - using the inside handle, simply jams the back of the connecting rod up against the door bolt and mechanically prevents the outside handle from pushing the bolt back. When you close the door with the inside lock engaged, the bolt itself pushes the inside handle out of the locked position.

The key lock turns a cam that mechanically butts up under the rotating mechanism of the outside door handle - preventing the handle from turning - but not locking the door bolt like the inside handle lock.

So, again, if you engage the inside lock and then close the door it will unlock.

Other point of interest is that if the door is locked from the outside - using the lock cylinder, you CAN open it with the inside handle - repeatedly - and the outside handle REMAINS locked until it is turned again with the key. You can also push the door bolt open with a fine screw driver from the outside.

So, if you are in your truck, and the passenger side key lock is locked (you got in the unlocked drivers side), and you flip the drivers side handle up to lock it from the inside, then slide out the passenger side and simply close the door, the passenger side door will be locked too. You can do this with your keys in the ignition and lock yourself out.

Solution - spare key under the hood. Or, you can push the bolt back in on the door with the key lock with a screw driver and open the door. Or if it's a 48-50 you can just flip open the wind wing handle with a coat hanger, reach in and unlock the door locked with the inside handle.

This reminds me that I've never tried my passenger side lock to see if it works. I should do that sometime. I'm glad I live in a neighborhood where one door lock that has never been tried seems fine.

Random pondering.

Hmm... my passenger side door is jammed shut and I can't get it open from the inside. I did notice that the key is broken off in the lock and the outside door handle won't turn.

I thought the broken key was the problem, but from what Julie says I should be able to open the door from the inside no matter if the outside lock is engaged or disengaged... maybe the mechanical guts in the door are rusted together?

Yep, you should be able to open the door from the inside if the outside lock is locked. Silly suggestion, try pulling the inside handle the other way.

Plus, you should be able to stick a screw driver between the door and the cab and pry the bolt back and open the door.

Also, you can lock the key lock with the door open, then close the door and the door will stay locked (from the outside)
