I call this a poor man's restoration. I expect this project to take approx. 3 yrs. and lots of patience. For the most part I plan on having the truck available to drive during the summer months while doing the work during the winter. This winter's portion has been from the back of the cab to the rear bumper. I began by removing the bed and standing it on it's nose on a furniture dolly, then rolling it to a corner, out of the way. I stripped everything off the frame, cross members, spring perches, etc. Most of the cleanup work was done with a wire wheel with only a few parts being sandblasted. New stainless steel brake and fuel lines are from inline tube in MI. The paint is all POR-15 products and the labor is mine. I purchased new leaf spring packs locally and the new gas tank through ebay. I had to totally rebuild the rear end as all the carrier bearings showed signs of overheating and had metal galling. The ring and pinion were replaced as years of offroading through mud and water left them both pitted. I also had severe galling on the pinion stub shaft. My next step is have the underside of the bed media blasted, have any repairs necessary then paint and undercoat the daylights out of it. A new paint job is 3 or 4 yrs. down the road.
Ney nice work ..it looks great ..I am pretty much where you are at in your restoration but I am at a dead stand still due to the lovely New england weather an I adont have a garage !! keep up the good work ..By the way is that POR 15 worth the money . I am currently using rustoleim , and it seems to work out ok
instead of using undercoating. go to a company who does spray in bed liners. undercoating is not air tight. and moisture can get tapped between the bed and the coating and the bed WILL start to rust and you will not even know it. this happened to me. i just wish they had come out with the spray in liner's year's ago. just thought i'd give ya a heads up before you did all the work on the bed. oh one more thing. i used POR-15 on my frame after i sandblasted it. the truck was sitting outside in the weather, in NJ, and after 4 months of sun hitting it. it started to fade and peel off. my father used it on the floorpans of his car and it still looks good after 6 years. i dont know what happened. but i will never use that over priced stuff again.

Yea, that's what I understood or heard so I top coated all the black with their chassis topcoat. I'm hoping it holds well, too much work to do it again. F350Supercab 4X4, I like the idea about the bedliner. That stuff is supposed to be about bullet-proof.
alot of guys out here in AZ who have wheeling rigs. take the carpets out and do the floors with this stuff. so when their done playing in the mud. all they have to do to clean the inside of the truck out is hose it out. they put a few drain hole's in to let the water out. it really works great. you never have to worry about your floorpans rusting out. it also makes the body of the truck stronger. i plan on doing this to my truck. but i'm gonna put the carpet back in. the truck is rust free and i want to keep it that way.
Gary , after spending time and Money to rebuild your rear axle and seeing how "playing in the mud " will ruin Bearings and whatnot....are you going to do the "PIGGY" or keep your truck in good shape.......I'll bet you've worked too hard just to turn around and screw it up again.........fd
fatdaddy, this truck doesn't go out on bad weather any more. I've owned ti for 23 years and believe it's earned the right to not be abused any more. Hard work now is a little mulch for the wife's flower gardens. When I do the front I have plans to help the motor a little. Maybe 3-400hp worth a little. I like a truck with *****.
Gary , you're one smart restorer....I could tell by your detailed post concerning the condition of the axle and how much work and expense you went too ..to put it back right that "ONCE" was enough for you.......good luck with your project........fd
Nice work! I will use your truck as a model to build mine on (my '75) keep up the good work!
oh ya I am using the Heavy rust rustoleum primmer ..it goes on nice . You need to take the scale off but you dont have to get it to shiney metal, in other words if you are doing a frame off in your back yard this stuff is for you ! Today I looked at the portion of the frame I painted in the fall and the rust HAS NOT bled through so I am going to continue to use it on the rest of the frame ,and then put a nice top coat of black on it , to answer your question Torque1st!
