Garage Heating and Cooling

Looking for some tips on what may be the best option for climate controlling a garage. Area is 38' x 24' with 10 foot ceilings. It's well insulated, has 2 windows where a window unit could be installed, which is what I would prefer, I'm just not sure it would be enough. If it isn't going to be enough I would hate to waste the money so I would like to hear from anyone that has any helpful info. In the winters it can get down to the 20s but not much if any colder and the summers can be consistently in the high 90s to low 100s.

I've got a 42'x60' with 14' eaves and 21' at the peak. I use a propane-fueled Munchkin boiler with radiant in-floor heat to heat it. Cooling it is done with two industrial ceiling fans. The heat isn't too much of a problem, because of the high ceiling. If your slab is already poured, the radiant in-floor heat is out, but you could check into the radiant heaters that mount to the ceiling.

Based on my calculations, you'd need at least a 25,000 BTu unit to cool that area and that's if:

You keep the door closed all the time.
You don't park a hot truck in the garage.

Otherwise, you should double that unit size. Fans and cold beverages might be a better and cheaper idea.

As far as heat goes i have been researching my options for awhile for my 28x38 and have decided on the Mr. Heater Propane Garage heater. They also make a smaller 45k BTU as well as a natural gas unit.

You could go with an electric 4-5k wall unit but if you spend a fair amount of time in the garage it will get costly even though the units are relatively inexpensive.

The vent free type propane heaters are inexpensive as well but if the garage is fairly tight they can cause a problem as they need a fresh air source.

Most gas companies will supply the tank, most at no cost. Propane running about $3.10/gal here in NewEngland. You can run your own line but should have it inspected before you fire it up.

I've got a small 14x20 shop here at the house. well insulated. Kerosene and unvented lp had you walking into walls in no time. Electric radiators got it nice and toasty just in time to come back in the house for the night. Set a high efficiency lp house furnace. It pulls in outside air for the burner and exhausts through pvc. Its around 70 or 80k btu. It does the job!!! You're gonna need a furnace and central ac for that big shop.
