Well I have been having some idling issues out of my 95 F150 with 302. So far the troubleshooting is pointing to a bad cam lobe on the exhaust side! I will be doing some more testing in the next couple of weeks. But have been lean towards a new cam anyway. However I am not to familiar with cams, so I wanted to see what you guys suggest. First of its my daily driver, however I would like to have a little more low end TQ and I will occasionally haul a 6x10 utility trailer with some motorcycles on the back. I also dont want to hurt my fuel mpg, if possible increase it! I was looking on summit and saw this - Summit Racing SUM-K30032 - Summit Racing Street & Strip® Cam Kits - Overview - SummitRacing.com
But I have also heard some people talking about comp cams. I am also kind of on a budget. Any info or suggestions would be great.
Your 95 has a roller cam , you want to keep it that way , the summit cam your looking at is flat tappet , you could use the HO cam , or the stock cam with 1.7 rocker ratio , thats just a few choices....Lew
Ok I noticed that there is a mechanical and hydraulic roller style cam. Is there a certain one I should use or will either one work in my truck. Also what else will I need besides gaskets, like I am sure I will need new springs(stock or after market?) anything else?
Yes I was going to purchase a cam kit with litters. I guess my next question would be is that I want alittle more performance than stock so what do you recommend as far as lift and duration.
Trying to get alot of TQ at low RPM in a 302 isnt easy , they like the higher rpms when it comes to power , i like the HO mustang cam , with the 95 reg cab SB you could even use the E 303 FR cam , im sure others will be along with other recomendations , your truck should be mass air....you could just use the stock cam with 1.7 ratio rockers , but the other two cams will give you alot more power at a little higher rpm....
I have heard its hard to get low end torque! So sense I am on a budget it would probably just be wise to stick with the stock cam. Do you know if the 1.7 ratio rockers were stock in my truck or is that an upgrade. Also the HO cam is there anything I would need besides lifters and new springs, could I still use the stock rockers.
The ho cam will go right in , you can use the stock rockers , the stock rocker ratio on the 302 is 1.6 so if you use the stock cam with 1.7 ratio it will increase the lift of the cam...
Unless you have solid body mechanical non roller lifters you should replace them the hydro ones get worn out ant you may have a soft one or one that won't compress. They are cheap don't worry
more low end? Ford did all they could to get low end out of the 302. I do not belive you are gonna see much improvment in low speed torque.
That cam you linked to is much larger than the stock cam and may not let the computer be happy.
Years ago Crane had a cam specificly for the 302 EFI trucks and it was smaller than that one.
It was 190/198 @.050 on 109 CL with .416/.432 lift.
If you really want low end torque look for a 300 six.
I'd just get a replacment cam myself.
Well it looks like I am just gonna use the stock cam and look at replacing the rockers maybe! With my idling issue I am sure the cam or one of the lifters is dying! Way to much headache to figure out when the stock stuff works just as good!
Roller cams ussally don't wear much , i will be interested in what you find , let us know , when you build a 302 as long as you don't go for all out rpm on the cam your low end tourque will still be better than stock , i use the E303 with alot of other stuff & its nothing like the stock motor , more power every where , just more in the higher rpm range but still alot more than stock on the low end ....but thats with exhaust & heads and other goodies.....
I thought it was funny how big the ports are in the intake for the 302 truck engines. Bigger than the 5.0 HO, bigger than the 351w. This may have something to do with why they don't scream until 3000RPM, lol. At least mine doesn't.
Yeah, more lift alone is what these trucks need. It will increase the torque throughout the RPM range. Being a smaller, short stroked engine, a .500+ lift is a nice jump from what I've seen in how the engine feels. But, hell, what doesn't that apply to, lol?
