i have a 2001 excursion and i went to replace my fuel filter but i was unable to loosen the cover there must be a tool for this i tried a rubber filter tool but no luck any ideas ?
They do make a tool. It is a pretty simple piece that engages in the fins. You can get them for $20 or so. You really don't need it if you have a big pair of channel lock pliers. You can sometimes get it with the jaws, or the handles, which ever fits best.
This is a MAc version, but OTC 6760 makes one too that is more widely available.
I had something similar to this laying in my tool box. I bought it to change out some wheel bearings in my old 03 ford ranger back in the day. It has been sitting in there for a few years and I have found out that it works like a charm on my fuel filter lid in taking it off and putting it on.
Use the channel locks, you'll get it eventually. When I did mine the filter I got at NAPA came with a new top and it was different than the stock one and has what is basically the head of a bolt on it, so therefor the specialty filter tool is no good. Just need a socket or wrench.
So depending on what replacement filter you get the filter wrench may be useless after one use.
when i changed mine the replacement i got from Napa had the top attached with a nut molded into the plastic...takes a large socket (forget what size) or a wrench...but makes it really easy
If you have the orginial ford cap on it then just take a long pair of pliers and put the ends in the slots of the cap and take a long screwdriver and put it between the handles of the pliers and trun it off. If you still cant get it then it was put on way too tight then you might need a strap wrench.
The guys that use the Napa filter, have you noticed any difference in the filtering with that filter,I didn't buy that one because it didn't have what looked like a pre-filter in the Motorcraft filter, but it would be easier to change if you have the Napa filter.
I have the factory cap and I use a longer 1/2" extension and a mallet or hammer. A few taps and it'll come lose. Almost seems as thats what the slots are for.
Thanks guyS today i change it only now my drain wont stop drippin it was drippin all the time i left it open and cranked it then opened and closed it it was good then when i drove it it started to drip any ideas?
Try opening and closing it a few more times. If not take out the filter and stick your finger into the bowl. Clean it up as best as possible. Might have some gunk keeping it open.

You may need to change the orings on the fuel shutoff.
I have the stock cap on mine and use my oil filter wrench to get mine off. The filter wrench has a swivel handle which makes it very easy. Or the channel lock handles in the holes in the cap work well too with a long screw driver to help with leverage.
