I bought an 84 ford f250 hd. It has a 460 gas, borg warner trans. 4x4. Headache rack and lights, warn winch bumper. It has after market cruise control. It also has a marine battery switcher/splitter. Interior is awesome. Outside is dent and rust free and it will be repained and rhino lined. It has trouble running when it warms up but starts no problem. I need to replace the master cylinder, fuel sending unit, filters, spark plugs and things like that. I pait $700 gas for it got 2 spare tires, a reese fifth wheel hitch and few other things. Any idea as to what could cause the stalling when warmed up? I haven't had time to tear into it just brought it home.
When it stalls, see if you have spark and fuel. A spark problem is probably the ignition box mounted on the inner fender, and a fuel problem is probably the oil pressure switch or a oil pressure problem. You have to have oil pressure on your truck to make the electric fuel pumps run.
Will do that, I appreciate the advice. Its a carbed 460, it runs great, starts up good but apparently once it gets warmed up it stalls out. I am thinking it may be vapor locking. Also, the truck has the t-19, with heavy duty everything. I want to swap interiors, this one is mint not a single rip or tear. The guy owned it since new and had all the factory paperwork. At the least I will cover them with some awesome seat covers because I can't let such a good specimin get dirty.
Thus far my plans are to run some carb cleaner through it, since I think it doesn't have an intank fuel pump, just a engine mounted one. Keep in mind I haven't looked at it much. Briefly checked it out and hauled *** home. Thus far I want to install better headlights, I heard they are weak. Install either a dash mounted or tree mounted headlight high toggle switch. Weld bullbars with mesh onto my warn bumper, rhino line that and the head ache rack. I also was wondering my interior is mint, I mean not a single rip or anything. I need to find seat covers I think. Also, I haven't had luck with figuring out how to wire in a radio, it still has the stock one and harness I would be ok with just wiring in a ipod hookup and leaving the stock head unit, but in any case I am not going to cut the bezel.
Full plans are
Get her running better, Rhino line bottom quarter panels, bed, bed rails, uncarriage/wheel wells, wire in a under hood light. Rhino line rack and winch bumper. Install winch. Lift is 4-6 inches. Build a heavy duty rear bumper. Install skid plates and rear bumper.
I also have the idea of installing an overdrive setup, I've done some searching here and other wise couldn't figure out definitevly how easy this would be.
I have also checked the tech guides and my questions aren't really answered by them so I posted here.
Welcome, I also recently bought an F250HD with the 460. Its a great truck although I refuel every 150ish miles. Have you considered the tanks as the source of your stalling? My rear tank will work for a short time then it seems to plug up and loose fuel, its a thought.
If you do have the mechanical pump (as I do) it points even more toward the DuraSpark II box on the inner fender, or perhaps the ignition pick up inside the distributor.
For the headlights just install one of those inexpensive relay kits from LMC.
It's amazing what good grounds and a direct current path will do for brightness.
Congrats on the new truck and welcome to the forum! Do you have some photos you could post of the truck and the interior? We would love to see your new ride!
