Driveline choices
I have an '84 F350, that originally had a diesel in it. I was planning on putting the 460 and four speed out of my 78 bronco in it, but did some measuring and found out that the trans, transfer case combo is gonna come up WAY short to hook up the rear drive shaft.
So, my question is, does anyone know if the four speed out of my '78 will bolt up to an '80s era transfer case, or am I gonna have to come up with a trans, to? I would like to put a five speed in it, but have not been able to come up with a donor truck that I can afford.
Any suggestions??
The big differences are like you found; different lengths, different shifters and shifter locations. That 460 should fit if you get the correct mounts from a truck that had a 460. Your diesel crossmember is the 460 type that clears the oil filter, though you still may need a adapter to turn the filter at the correct angle. It all should bolt in with the correct parts, since 83ish-up trucks had a 460 as a option.
Yes, I had contemplated just having the drive shaft from the carrier forward lengthened, but I am trying to keep it cost effective, and and looking into the future, in the unfortunate event that I have to replace it, I would have to make one again.
I have actually welded up my own driveshafts in the past, but I plan on taking this truck on long trips with the family, so I would rather have everything as sound as possible. Also, again, if I break down, it would be nice if I could just go anywhere close by to get parts.
Thanks again for the great help......
Speaking of which, anyone know where I could find rear door panels for the early 80's crew cabs? I am guessing that they must have been conversion trucks perhaps? Having a hard time tracking them down for these years.
