on my 86 my turn signal flashes fast. i know it usually means a light might be out but my lights are good except for the left turn light on the dash is burnt out but it blinks fast when i do it both ways. could it possibly be the relay?
Yep, if its the factory thermal relay its probably ready for replacement. Mine finally gave out after too much load from pulling my boat trailer with old crummy wiring. Easy fix is buy an electric replacement relay for a few $ from your local parts store.
The bi-metal circuit breaker (flasher as most folks refer to it) can weaken with extreme age but increases in make/break intervals are caused by reduced load on the unit. This reduction in amperage through the flasher causes the bi-metal to cool off faster than it would under a heavier load. Weak negative (ground) will also allow this to occur as there is a greater level of heat in the circuit to begin with with a poor negative connection. The replacement units that do not rely on the size of the load to determine the flash rate are actually solid-state relays with a small timing circuit built into them. the negates the need for the bi-metal in the unit which is not only what gave the old flashers their functionality but also their unique "Love me tender" audio signature.
