Speedo died

The speedo in my truck went haywire yesterday, it was doing loops around the dial and then just stopped moving altogether. The strange thing is the odometer and trip meter still work so I don't think it's the drive cable. Anyway.. this is the old mechanical speedo setup that is cable driven off the trans and I have another complete gauge pod on hand, what I want to know is has anybody taken the speedo out of one of these older trucks recently and if so what trick did you use to release the speedo cable. I tried once before to get the cable off but I simply couldn't get at it up under the dash.. too much stuff in the way. My plan right now is to dismantle the gauge cluster in the truck and just replace the speedo section instead of swapping the whole cluster, don't know if that will make it easier or not. Give me any suggestions you got.

I don't know if this will help , but i did one on my 88 mustang , don't know if they hook up the same , i remember there was a plastic clip on the end of the cable that had to be depresed to get the cable out , its been along time ago....Lew

Sounds like a broken or popped speedometer clock spring.

Paul,

As I recall from about two years ago, you must remove the instrument cluster from the dash. Pull it out a few inches, reach behind, and pop off the cable retaining clip.

Be careful not to damage the small white cable that sets the AT indicator.

I double checked my '89 factory service manual. It does not indicate how to remove the cable.

Fixed it yesterday.

Dismantling the gauge cluster didn't help with the cable but I managed to get enough slack in it by yanking on the cable from under the dash, then I was just able to fit my big mitt in behind the cluster and release it.. sometimes it's not so great being built like a gorilla. I then simply swapped in the speedo from my spare cluster and put it all back together, I'll have to go back in at a later date to reset the accumulated milage.. looks like that is possible by pressing out the pin that holds the counter wheels. Overall it wasn't too bad.

Sorry it was not easy. I am of slight build with small hands.

As for the odometer, you do not need to reset it. I swapped my old one from one speedometer panel to another.
