Any of you Ford nuts got some insight on an 84 F-250 with the 460 and in tank fuel pump (electric)??? I put in a new pump yesterday and I still dont get fuel. Yes, there is fuel in the tank. Tried taken a voltage reading at the harness on top of tank but it is pulsing...On Off On Off and so on. should this be or should it be direct V.?? please help I hate walking!!
The pulsing is the sender for the fuel level gauge, so you are checking the wrong wire.
Do the fuel pumps run when the keyswitch is first turned to start? Your system is prone to failure, a lot of people have trouble with it(I guess because these trucks are getting so old). If you do a search for "460 fuel" you should be able to get some posts with the info you need. Your truck drives the pumps directly from the starter solenoid during cranking, but feeds them through a relay and a oil pressure switch during run.
Alright guys, here we go, Dave says I was checking the wrong wire. I think he is right. These electric pumps dont operate unless the motor is running or turning, so to make a long story short, if you replace the electric pump and your lines are empty, you MUST crank on it for awhile for the fuel to recharge the system. I wasnt able to test and crank the engine at the same time as my arms are not long enough to allow me to see the meter. Problem solved. Thanks for the insight Dave. I learned something new today, and I will store that info in the back of my brain.
What I finally did after new tank pumps in 1998 by 2003 they were acting up, so I added an external electric fuel pump just forward of the tank switch over valve. I installed a 14 PSI 130 GPH pump with a pressure regulator. I now run about 4-5 PSI steady, with the return line open.
That has ended my fuel problems for many years now. I did just install a new pump after 7 years the old one wore out. I bought one from Skip White Performance for $46 delivered to my door. So far it is the best pump yet. I ran a Carter before This is a ProComp style pump.
