First time I heard about block heater flaking off and plugging cooler is this something new?
It has to be more than a bad design (and I am certainly not arguing the bad design part) - however too many people w/ high mileage and ZERO problems. What an interesting "puzzle".
Those were good links hubler13f - thanks.
Very interesting links, Jeremy. Thanks for providing them.
Yes, what a conundrum. It would be interesting to know what the high mileage no problem people are running although I'm sure you could put a "bell curve" to the whole class of high mileage trucks failure wise for repairs. I'm pretty amazed at how much crap I'm still getting out of my cooling system after all this time and miles, so the cooler failures don't surprise me.

Nope, it's not new, I just don't know if it's founded or not. It's been a long time since I first heard it and I'm fairly certain if it was a true problem it would be "on the boards" quite a bit. I almost never see it discussed anymore.

There is an 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" coolant hose that connects to the front engine cover on the driver's side. It kind of blocks the banjo bolt fuel line connection to the head.
The last time I tore my truck down that far, I looked into that metal tube and noticed a huge 1"x1" chunk of powder coating that was flaking off of the inside of that tube. I reached in with a pair of needle nose pliers and pulled it out.
Imagine how bad that could have clogged those coolers!
Sooooo, with all this talk about coolant, sounds like no one really knows what's in some coolants that could be bad or what I should look for in a coolant?
GO5 has silicates in it. Dexcool does not. But I read here not to use Dexcool. Huh?
From what I've read, after chemically flushing the system we should be able to use the OAT ELCs, sound right? CAT or Texaco ELC is what I am looking at. I also found Zerex ELC which is Dexcool compatible and silicate and phosphate free. Thoughts
