I'm currently doing a 1970 crewcab build. I've pretty much pulled all the axles and transfer case engine tranny and upgrading to parts that are easier to find. upgrading to a dana 44 high pinion for now and dana 60 rear. the dana 60's are not the same. the newer 60's like 1977 have better axles internal compared to the older 60's. I'm going to a 400 ford built up and able to run several different tranny's without much hassle. 205 transfercase married. they are cool trucks but parts are getting hard to find especially when you need one quick. but like mentioned they are getting rare.
Personally I'd stick with the Supercab and the 400 but that's just me. Also Supercabs F150 thru F350 all used the same beefy frame on the 4x4s. So you swap some Dana60s & springs in there and you have the equivalent of an F350!

That's nice to know and probably a worth-while upgrade if i come across some rear ends. Will my driveshafts still work? I just spent $400 getting my front one rebuilt.
After a bunch of research I think I'll stick with the '79. Imo there is no denying they are a better truck and still very easy to work on. I guess in the end I want the most durable truck even if it is a more common truck. Should be lots of fun fixing up; need to get a 2nd job. Wonder if a body shop would hire me part time?
I'm not sure about the driveshafts Zaaac. I'm glad to hear you're sticking with the 79, but like I said...that's just me. I never knew that so many would prefer a crewcab over a supercab. I never really cared for the look of the crewcab. As for the swiss cheese frames comment, I've never heard that one before (unless you're referring to rust)

I give you that it looks MUCH better than the 1 in the craigslist add you posted. The 4wd stance and bigger tires take away much of the akward proportion/fugly the longbeds have.
The one pictured still has lame roof clearance lights, new age rims that seem off on old trucks and an overly long wheel base. Take off the nerf bars, step rear bumper and visors on the windows and you'll be much closer to a good looking truck. Oh yeah and swap a 73-75 grill and headlights on to REALLY make it look GOOD!
Now keep in mind all of the above is my opinion, and different opinions on what looks "good" is what keeps us all from having the same truck.
That being said I'll take my short bed all day long before a long bed!!!!!!
That supercab with a shortbed does look pretty good, but I don't generally care for shortbeds. My supercab has a longbed and with a toolbox on it....I think it looks great! Are those fiberglass front fenders?
