I am just subscribing but I would be interested to see what people think. It would be cool to see a poll that showed 05-07 style headlights versus the 02-04.
I have Hid kit for my ex. Had it on there for 2 years now and have never had problem definately better out put of light. I went with 8000 k its a bluish tint to headlights.
The numbers you all are noting, are they a degree of brightness or color. I am most interested in the brightest light not necessarily image.
Years ago I took a lighting course in which the instructor said an older person would require 40 times as much light as a teen to do the same task. At the time I thought he was nuts but I am not a teen any more and now a believer.
They are referring to Temperature ratings (Kelvins) as you may know about already. In the HID (high intensity discharge) market...that is how they classify/market/sell them.
Each temp rating has X amount of lumens for that temp range (color). If you do a search you will find much more about it...better than I can describe, in short, here.
You need to a buy a kit and the bulb/portion is a real HID bulb, but with a retrofitted a specific base/socket (ie 9007, 9005, H4) - it allows the bulb to fit in an OEM headlight. Then it is connected to a ballast-which converts 12 volts into much high voltage. (2 types now the big old style & new style: digital - the size of credit card that is about 1/2 inch thick).
These are brightest bulbs sold, but there is a lot of controversy about the use of them.
I have installed the Sylvania Silverstar Ultra's on our Excursion - hands down better than the stock bulb. I think they are the best priced/performing Halogen bulb on the market (probably closer to your cup of tea). I have tried about 4-5 different type/brands of bulbs.
The cheapest place that you can find them are on Ebay...you can usually get them for $25-30 on ebay. I would personally find the buy it now with free shipping...than wait for the auction, because they always end up in the $23- 28. At the store they are $40-55 for the pair.
As a side trip I had looked at the Sylvania Silverstar Ultra but there were several comments that they had very short life expediency and in some case burned through the lens. The lens problem did not say that it was an Excursion lens but if that is a problem I would ask for comments from those that have used the Ultra in an Excursion.
Another comment that I saw and now I question. Some HID lights say they have a High Beam that is just the normal OEM light. Does this mean that there is only a brightness gain in the low beam.
the kit i posted a link to uses a HID high and low beam. the bulb moves creating a different focus in the housing giving you highbeams. you do not want a kit that has a halogen bulb piggybacking off the HID bulb. for one the halogen bulb wont put out any useable light, second it will screw up the beam patten of the HID.
for the whitest light you will want a bulb color around 4,300K to 5,000K and your bulb type is 9007
OEM has high and low beam...the cheap HID kits only have low unless you get bi-xenon kit then it has a high and low beam. I am sure the digital style doesn't have an adj. gain but I wouldn't think the older style wouldn't either.
Yeah..heats not a problem...I live in Arizona and the summer heat plus the bulb heat has not caused any problems yet...its been about 1.5-2 years.
AlaskanEX:
How long have you had them in your EX?
Is yours a metal or plastic base & is your ballast digital or the big one?
Have you had any problems with it?
i've had these kits in a number of my trucks, one since 2007. i just installed a new kit into my new excursion because my last one was destroyed in the wreck that toatled my last excursion. but the link above is to the kits i've been using since 2007. never a blown bulb, never a blown ballest,,no issues with any of them.
the bulbs have a plastic base, they use the normal style larger ballests. i have some friends that have had issues with there new digital ballests and they have blown 4 of them over a 6 month period. i have never had an issue with the older bigger style ballests, never killed one yet (fingers crossed)
