87 Ranger computer reset

Guy's a few months ago someone told how to reset the computer on my Ranger. I lost the info. It was something like disconnect than reconnect the battery. Than drive it a certain way through the gears or something like that. I understand the battery disconect but am lost from there.

It's hard to start when cold (fires and dies, fires and dies several times) like freezing temps. Will generally start first try when weather is warmer like raining and not snowing LOL. But runs rough.

Engine never gets up to operating temp. Prolly needs a thermostat. I just put a piece of cardboard in front of the new radiator like I did last winter. Haven't had to drive it yet to see if the heat will help it run better on the road.

It's the one in my sig. 2.9 auto trans XLT 4x4.

I have access to an 88 the same with a 5 speed that runes well with a busted frame for parts. It takes a full day to get to town to get parts and back as I live in the bush.

I don't have a repair manual so I can,t . I luv that icon

Thanks for any info.

Disconnect the Positive cable from the battery. Leave it disconnected for at least 15 minutes then reconnect. Then drive the truck at various speeds in different gears, making some stops along the way - in other words, your usual way of driving in town. This will rebuild trim tables in the computer and you should be good to go. The truck may run rough until the computer relearns the condition of the engine controls.
