Gas Mileage
I have a 2000 Sport Expedition with a 4.6L. What are your average city/highway miles with either 5.4L or 4.6L?
I traveled from Colorado to Michigan with a very full load and had terrible gas mileage. On the highway I got at times 10-11 miles and when I was really lite on the pedal I maybe got 14-15 miles to the gallon. Any ideas?
Do they make a performance chip that can be put in to help gas mileage?
Thanks.

There is an optimum speed to gas mileage ratio. I have found that it is around 1500rpm or 55-58mph WITH CRUISE CONTROL ON. If you don't "gun it" around town and try this on the highway, with your gas mileage computer on, you'll find that it will start to read 11-15 town, 18-20 highway. Be nice to your truck...

When I travel on the highway I go about 70 mph. I use my cruise control and go pretty much with traffic. The Expedition only has 2,000 miles on it and still I don't get what I think I should be getting (16-18 highway). Right now I have about quater tank left and have gone 200 miles. I don't step on the gas hard at all. My engine is a 4.6L and 17 inch wheels with 265 tires. Do you think that may be the problem? Anyway, I enjoy this vehical and would not trade it for anything. Would a computer chip help in this situation?

I've got a 1997 XLT with 30,000 miles, the 5.4 engine and the higher ratio rear end. I never get more than 12-13 in town (11-12 in winter) and usually get 13-14 on the highway. I'm easy on the gas pedal in town but drive 75mph on the highway. Short of replacing the tires with ones that have less rolling resistance, I'm not sure there's much else to be done.

Stacy: You might want to try chipping your Expedition. They offer a 30 day money back guarantee. If it doesn't help, return it for a full refund, you have nothing to lose. I have a 2000 Expy, 5.4, 3.55ls. I have installed a chip, and a K&N air filter. This truck gets 15 in town and 17.2 hwy. It has 3000 miles on it.

Stacey, I would give your truck another 3000 miles before you get too concerned about the milage. Of the 3 4.6l Ford vehicles I have driven in the last 3 years, all seemed to improve in fuel mileage and power at about the 5000 mile mark. My new 00 Expy has less than 500 miles and is sucking gas. These engines are built to very tight specs and require a few miles to get broken in. Also remember these are big trucks!!. A 10-20 knot headwind and some big hills can destroy any hopes of good gas mileage. I don't consider a chip for myself, as most require the use of Premium fuel for max power. And with the cost of fuel right now the added 1-2 miles per hour in fuel mileage is not cost effective for me. Good luck.

Stacy: Do the math! Example 14mpg using 20 gal fuel at 1.50 per gal.=280 miles 20 gal @ 1.50/gal=$30.00 fuel usage= .1071428 cents per mile or 10.7 cents per mile. This is no chip on regular fuel.
With chip add 2 mpg using Premium. same 20 gallons,at 16 mpg premium will travel 320 miles. 20 gallons Premium at 1.60 per gallon = $32.00.
$32.00 divided by 320 miles= .10 per mile or 10 cents a mile. If you are counting pennies this is a savings of .14 cents per 20 gal tank.
So you can gain the performance and still not increase your fuel costs.

Frog: You are absoloutely correct, Premium here is .20/gal. higher than regular. I can understand your reasoning now.
At 14mph with reg. fuel costing 1.50 per gallon it costs 10.7 cents per mile.
At 16 mpg with premium fuel costing 1.70 per gal it costs 10.6 cents per mile.
So, really there is NO savings with a Chip installed, but, there are also no additional fuel costs. There is a huge power difference and overall driveability to your vehicle. The Expedition has a very soft shifting transmission, the chip cures that also.
So, while there may be no fuel cost gains or losses with a chip, there are quite a few benefits.
I do understand that the Chip is not for everyone.
As an ex-racer, I want all the additional POWER that I can get. I also understand that an Expedition is not a race-vehicle, but, there is no reason for it to be a slug either.
