It has got hot here in Michigan the last few days. (mid 80's) Does higher environment temp have an effect on gas mileage. It has used a lot in the last few days. I got 30 miles on 1/4 tank. 98 f150. v6 4.2----285,000 miles
Yes the ambient temp will affect the fuel mileage and power.
Some reasons why:
1. The IAT senses the intake air temp and cause the PCM to adjust ignition timing and fuel/air ratio.
2. The hot air expands such that the cylinders intake less volume and make less power on the power stroke.
3. The PCM alters it's timing and fuel tables called short term fuel trim and long term fuel trims, as a reflection of the operating conditions.
4. What do you do? You step down a bit more on the throttle trying to get the truck to move more and use even more fuel under these conditions.
5. Fuel quality may enter into it.
It's just the physics of the world you live in.
