Question Intermittent wipers/washer don't work

Hey all,

I've been trying to chase down a problem that I've been having with my '92 Bronco and was hoping someone might be able to provide some insight.

When I turn the intermittent wipers to any speed setting, they will only work at a continuous speed. In addition, when I try to use the washer nothing happens and the wipers stay on until I turn the ignition off....a major pain in the @#$!

So far I have replaced both the WCM and the wiper switch on the column($$$$), but that hasn't fixed it yet. Does anyone know what I am missing? Is there a relay somewhere or something like that? The only thing I haven't changed is a large fuse in the fuse panel.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Dan

Intermittent wipers/washer don't work

I think it's the WCM - you're talking about the one behind the glove box, right?

Intermittent wipers/washer don't work

have seen the wiper motor cause the very problem you're talking about, (except washer concern) as long as the multifunction switch was a motorcraft part and not some cheap piece o crap i would go for the motor. in the past 11 yrs. i've replace maybe one wiper control module and thats been on a probe. multifunction switches fail the most with motors in second place. hope this helps sincerely scott

No intermittentwipers/no washer

kcdan,

Have you fixed your problem?...is so, what is it? My '93 Bronco has a similar problem.

Intermittent wipers stopped working first. Then pushing on the multi-function switch is supposed to operate washers and the wipers fora few seconds ...none of this works now

Replaced the WCM...not the fix. Wiper motor when operating does make a sound as if it's going out but has been this way for a year. Even if the motor, this should not effect the washer...right?

Looking for help from anyone !

Thanks Jerry. I really hate doing component replacements, but I think I'll try the motor. According to my Haynes manual there is a way to troubleshoot the multi-function switch and determine if it's faulty...I may try that this week.

Gotta do something soon...haven't seen any yet, but we are already in sleet and snow season and I really need "blue juice" when the freezing wet stuff falls.

Wipers/Washer-FIXED !

Bottomline is I repaired my multi-function switch for a little sweat equity and $0.

I first replaced the wiper control module which sits behind the glove box. This was a $65 part. That wasn't the problem so I returned it for a full refund. I was going to replace the motor but exploring the multi-function switch seemed interesting... so I did.

After removing it from the steering column (an easy removal), I then used a continuity tester (bascially a battery light with two wires...if a circuit is continuous, the light lights) and tested the terminals in accordance with the Haynes Manual. Simple tests on the washer terminals indicated no continuity...manual says to replace switch.

So...worst case is I buy a new one ($100 or so), best case I can fix it. So...I unscrew the 5 torx screws and open up the switch. Right away I'm saying "oh oh, I'll never get this back together".

I do find a green wire that has pulled loose from its connection and it's a match for the washer terminal...seems to be the problem. After a little effort and drop of solder, the connection is fixed.

After a little more effort and brain teasing (there are some springs that need to be retracted to put it back together), the switch does go back together. Continuity checks as OK.

Back in the truck. The washer works and interminent wipers work on all settings. Good thing....it's supposed to snow and rain this week.
