i want to swap the rear end i now have in my 77 f100, 351m/.c6, with one that's more suited to the highway. the one i have in it now is ok but the motor spins too high.
can i take one from an older ford car, like a thunderbird, and just swap it out? also, is there an easy way to determine the gearing of a car rear end without having to rotate the drive shaft and watcha the wheel go round?
thanks for your thoughts and advice.
If you swap out, pay attention to spline count, and try to find a center section that still has the ID. tag on it, that will tell you what ratio it is.
i'll agree with the post above on swapping center sections....not sure about the car rear idea though....if you're going to swap a complete rear out of another truck keep in mind that rears from a 67-79 are all the same length from backing plate to backing plate BUT..67-76 & some early 77's had narrow frames..34" some 77's & all 78-79 had 37" wide frames...if you get one that doesnt match yours you'll have to torch the pads off of the rear & move them either in or out 1.5"...hope it helped..if anyone has any info on the frame differences please correct me this is what i've noticed in my adventures...Chris
I'm not sure I would swap the whole rear end, just the center section. Count the splines on the ends of your axles and go to the wrecking yard and get one with the same splines and lower gears(numerically).
