I can't really give you an unbiased opinion bro, sorry bout that.
You can look up many of my posts and see that I had a bad experience with this truck as well as 2 bad experiences with mazda 5 spd.
So it'd be best not to take my word for it when it comes to the 4.2L, I've heard many people are having good reliability with the 98' s on up- but my truck was a 98' too.
It's hard to say-I definately liked that cute lil' motor at first, and then still din't have a problem with it till the big let down-that one almost soured me on Ford altogether.
Hopefully someone here who has had good reliability and no issues with a later model will be able to give you some good adive-just be sure he has more than 50,000 miles on it, or you'll have to take that advice with a grain of salt....lol.
Best I could say is look into a 4.6L- but I've never even owned one of those so I'm no authority on that one either...lol.
Besides, remember- I am biased- so you'll have to take everything I've said with a grain of salt as well!
Hope this helps.
Regards.

I've got a 240 and a 300. My friend's all have 4.2's and I've driven their trucks before. If I had the money I would buy a '99-up F150, they're great trucks and hardly any maintenance. If you get a 5-speed, there are 3 rubber plugs on the top back for the shift rails. Get them replaced with steel ones. What happens is with age the rubber shrinks and cracks, then falls out, then goes your tranny fluid when you're driving down the road, it's a silent killer. Also, change the fluid out with some synthetic Mercon fluid, it only takes like 3 or 4 quarts, so it's cheap insurance.

Thanks for the information. Don't have to worry about the V6 anymore. Never take the wife TRUCK SHOPPING, started out with 150 XL supercab, Now own 150 Supercab, Flareside Sport, V8 (4.6), 3.55 limited slip, towing package, 17" tires, running boards and a MooN Roof. Now when the H-D fails me it will be towed with class.
