Can a 4.2L pull a 77 F100 Reg Cab? I am trying to figure out how I can get all of my vehicles to Texas from Va when I get transferred and don't know if I can pull a heavy old truck like that with a 6 cylinder. Any advice would be great.
No.
That's the short answer. Depending on the specifics of your truck (rear end, auto or manual, crew cab or regular) I'd say with the BEST of all possible worlds you'd be pushing it. (literally and figuratively!)
W/ 3.55 rear end your MAX towing would be about 3500 lbs w/ manual transmission and 5,500 with auto transmission.
I'd guess your F100 weighs about 4,500 -5,000 lbs. If you were to use a car hauler trailer I'd guess that would be another 1,000 lbs.
Way over for the manual and slightly to moderately over for the auto.
COULD you do it? Possibly.
Would I? No.
There are lots of hills between VA and Texas!
Too much at stake from a safety standpoint in addition to possible damage to your truck.
You might want to post in the towing forum also. Lot's of good advice to be offered there.
Thanks Brian.
I had kinda thought it would be "pushin' it", but thought I'd ask the pro's. You bring up a good point about the hills. I have driven it a few times, but forgot to factor that in. Proof that it's always good to get a second opinion.
Thanks again!
shhhhhhh, don't tell anyone else this, but i have a '99 4x2 3.55s and 255r tires, 5 speed shortbox reg cab. that's not the shhhhhh part. i pulled my 83 f/s bronco with 38's on a car dolly and tools and extra tires, wife, food, etc etc 120 miles from west metro mn to rochester mn and back. i couldn't believe how well the truck pulled this weight, and i got 13 mpg to boot! i know i shouldn't have, but it was a big 4x4 wheeling weekend. the bronco would have broken b4 the li'l F-1. don't try this at home.
all i gotta say is that i have towed my 71 mustang w/ car trailer, my truck is a 5sd, 6 cyl. it did it towed a total of about 5,000 miles w/ it, that is 5500lbs. for 5000mi. just change your clutch first.
