Ok so I just picked up a '97 f-350 4x4, 351 auto. The PO said the odometer/ speedo was on the fritz, and sure enough it stopped working on the way home. I have a buddy with a junk '94 f250 auto and a 460, So I just ripped out the hole guage cluster and plugged in the new one. It seams to work great, and I even have a tach now! Is there any problem with this? I do have a check engine light on now but everything runs fine. Oh and now there's 42K more miles on my truck then this morning.
Is there any way to get it reprogrammed with the correct mileage? is there any problem just swapping these or is there a way to fix my old one? I do like having the tach now! Thanks.
Oh where is the OBII plug? I wanted to clear the check engine code but couldn't find it under the dash?
My money is on your '97 still having OBD-I. I do not think the heavier trucks went OBD-II until the Super Duty models came out.
As far as the odometer reading, no real issue as long as when you sell the truck you make the appropriate statement the mileage is incorrect. Many states do not require an odometer statement on vehicles over a certain age anyway.
ALL vehicles made after 1996 are OBDII. Every one. That is by mandate of the United States Congress. The plug must be within 3" of the driver also. On Fords, it is usually under the steering wheel at the bottom of the dash.
I wouldn't worry about reprogramming the speedo/odo unless it really bothers you that it is off now. Just be sure to tell the next owner, if there is one, about it.

I beg to differ with that statement above. Here is a clip from my Ford Service CD:
If the truck is over 8500 GVW (49 State) or 14000 GVW (CA) then it is OBD-I..
Ok, it worked for one day, today on the way to work my speedo went haywire bouncing all over the place, and odometer went blank. tranny started shifting badly as well.
It's worse then it was before. before the tranny worked great, speedo didn't do anything and odometer had some sort for display, Oh and everything worked great an hour before that on the way home including speedo and odometer.
Sounds to me like a problem with the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) circuit. Time to figure out if that truck is OBD-I (most likely) or OBD-II and pull the codes.
Not all the Ford trucks went to OBD-II until the 2000 model.
I think the last one to have OBD-I was the 1998 F-53, they sold the 1998 F-53 in 1999.
His would be OBD-I.
There are no codes for this system other than the one for for information not getting to the computer. We know that the information is getting that far all ready.
I think you may have bearing problems in the rear end. Check the VSS in the rear end to see if it has junk stuck to it. If it does you have problems in the rear end.
Does your amber ABS lamp come on on the dash also?
Also I would like to have the PCM computer out of your buddy's junk '94 f250 auto and a 460 if the auto is a E4OD. I would like to have a spare on the road for my motorhome.

...And the OBD II plug will be close to the passenger side. Its between the glove box and the A/C controls.
You can't put a gauge cluster from a '94 into a '97. It will fit but it will cause problems that you will never be able to fix. So step one is to put your original gauge cluster back.
Your truck is OBD-I. The connector is under the hood. If the check engine light is on you will need to pull the codes. My recommendation is to get an Innova 3145 code scanner. They are about $30 and well worth the money. You can pull the codes with a paperclip but it's a PITA and it's very easy to misread them. If the light just came on because of the cluster change then that may have triggered it.
If you speedometer stopped working it's likely either a wiring problem between the VSS on the rear axle and the PSOM or the PSOM itself. Try doing a search, it's been talked about quite a bit in this forum.

Why won't the '94 work? It seams to? Thanks for the help guys!
My battery was dead this morning as well, so I charged that and checked, when its running my volts went down, so I'm guessing I have a bad Alt. going to replace that and see if that has anything to do with it.
