I had a Ford truck project many years ago that didnt materialize. At the time I completely rebuilt the 215 engine, I mean everything. All new exhaust seats, new valves, bearings, complete NOS rocker assembly, bored, pistons, rebuilt damper, new cam, turned crank, on and on and on. I spared no costs and it was done right. It is totally complete, manifolds, carb etc. Other than circulating oil ocassionally with an oil pump tool, it has been sitting on an engine stand in my dry shop for at least 8 years.
I'm thinking about selling it but have no idea what its worth. Yes I know, its worth what I can sell it for. What I'm asking is what do you guys think is a fair value for it?
I can't remember what year the engine is, it was in a 54 F-100 which should have been a 233. Some time during its life, someone swapped in this 215. I can get a casting number if that helps.
So, what do you say, what can I sell it for?
Thanks - Alan
215? 233? huh? if it's got a rocker arm it sounds like an OHV 223 and that would have been correct for a 54 F100.. so just what is it ? Flathead or Overhead valve..and yes some numbers might help.
To me, if I needed an engine, I'd pay at least a grand if you have documentation of the build. The issue with any of these things is your market; unless you've got it on a nice pallet and will ship it, you're limited to what someone in your neighborhood is willing to pay.
Thanks everyone, the casting number on the block is EAA-6015-3. It is an overhead valve, not flathead. The distributor is almost in the middle of the block on the right side. I took pictures of it but can't figure out how to upload them.
Ross has given you good info. The only problem with the 215 is the limited appeal. You're almost required to find someone who is restoring his 52/53 truck and wants it to be period correct. Most would just swap it for a 223 or bigger if they're building a driver.
For the guy who needs it, it's priceless. Be prepared to keep it indefinitely until the right guy comes along. I have a 221 flathead LB complete engine that fits the same category. I haven't found someone who needs it where shipping would be reasonable....so I just keep it under the bench - some day....
The part number is the bare block # for 215's. I don't have my list handy but its likely the same number would appear on a 223 block.
