Hello to all. I am knew to FTE and this is my first post. I am wondering if any of you might be able to help me out.
l have a 1989 F250 XLT Lariat supercab with a 7.5l 460. My catalytic converter is rotted out and I need to replace it. I am too cheap to pay the $600 for a new one. I don't know what kind it is (couldn't tell if there was a p/n on it for all the rust).
Does anyone know if one of the numbers in my VIN represent the type of exhaust for my motor? I would like to go and find someone who is parting out a truck and get a cat off them. Any suggestions? Has anyone sucessfully done this before?
So far as I know the only thing the federal smog law says is it must have a cat. Currently our 88 F350 460 has a test pipe for a cat, to make it legal I intend to get a 3" in/out cat from summit for less than $100. and slap it on. Hopefully it will pass the sniffer test at least once.
Ours had california smog the "CORRECT" cat cost $700+ at LMC trucks.
Yeah, mine does have "California Emmissions" and I am familiar with LMC. I will give Rockauto a try too. Thanks for the advice guys.

Regardless if you have a federal or Cali emission truck, do you live in California? If you don't you can buy a CAT from whomever makes a universal that you are willing to modify or get an OE replacement. If you live in California then you have to purchase a CAT that has an approved EO number meaning the company/manufacture gave in to state extortion and paid big money to CARB for them to have their blessing and be able to sell it in California on any Cali-emissions vehicle. I purchased one from Eastern Catalytic and the fit and finish is great and they make a hi-flow performance CATs with less restriction and it passes SMOG. They were very reasonably priced.

Roger That. I am going to check out Catco next. I don't live in Cali. I used to and that's where I bought the Truck. I live in Ontario (Canada) now, and they have some picky regulation too. Thanks for the input gents.
