Where are the ID numbers on the Y blocks? I think I should have a 236 in my 54 F100, but it really has a lot more "pep" than I expected. I wonder if I have a bigger motor?
I found mine ID # on the drivers side rite above the oil filter and below the head. Don't let the small ci. fool you they will run with the best of them. I will be putting hedders on mine soon. I took the cross over pipe off made it duels and their is a big incress in power. Check this wed site outwww.ford-y-block.com
I have been on the Y block website already looking for an adapter to install an OD transmission. I really need on or at least a different rear gear.
What do you think of the 4bbl intake on the homepage? Is that a little much for an intake? I wonder if any of the other brands make on for the Y block?
I really wonder if there is any interchange that can be done with the 236 and other sizes?
I have also been looking for a od trans and to switch to a modern trans seems very nice but is to much money. I have been told that a warrner T89 4 sp od will bolt in were my T98 4sp is just need to cut the drive shaft. I went from a 4.56 rear to a 3.70 rear and I can run 65mph all day. I am going try a set of 3.50 that seems what every one is happy with. That 4 barrel intake I realy want that, one of these day's I am going to save up and get it. But for now I have a ford cast iron 4 barrel intake you can pick them up for around $100. The one you want is the one that fits a holley paddern but put a small elderbrock or a carder on it. I don't know about the interchange of intakes. You may want to find out what engine you have first and go from their. But I do have exhaust manifolds from a 54 239 truck on my newer 57 272 so I think the hedders should work.

There are no modern intake manifolds for the Y-Block,
that's the reason it's so expensive, a captive audience
and the price goes up...
But you can still find old hot rod manifolds at swapmeets,
I've got an original 4bbl cast iron big pattern, and a 2x4bbl
small pattern...
Can the 4 barrel intake be found on big trucks? If so what year trucks and what size engines are they found on. I know of a junk yard with some big trucks and when the snow melts around here (if ever) I wnat to go snooping around.
I have seen some 4 bbl intakes show up on ebay. But they all are quoted as being for 272 - 312. I wonder if that will fit a 239? I'm not sure I want to prove my "wonder" for some of those prices!
The 239/256 intake is unique and the Merc had a 4bbl. The factory Teapot carb is a real junker but the manifold bolt pattern will fit a small base Carter WCFB.
Every now and again some tripowers for that 1st year show up on EBay.
The 256 was the optional engine in 54-mid 55 in the F600 and replaced by the 272 late in the year.
The Cast ID letters and numbers are over the Oil filter, just under the head parting line. Aside from various books that show and list the codes, there's a Y-Block site that clearly shows the location and lists all the codes and what the block is.
www.ford-y-block.com is the home page. Pick the Y-Block Information link, which lists more links. Pick Y-Block Technical Information. Then Pick Block Information.
While it's best to remove the filter, you can manipulate a mirror and a flashlight. And if it's too dirty to read, drop the oil filter, have at it and change the filter.
There ARE modern Intakes and shortly, Heads for the Y-Blocks. The Blue Thunder Aluminum Intake made it's debut last year and has taken off. At our Shootouts, it exhibited a 15% power gain over modified '57 Cast Iron Intakes. Compare the prices on the e-bay intakes with the new Blue Thunder Aluminum Intakes at www.ford-y-block.com
Aluminum Heads have been in the making in Ohio since they were talked up in August of 2001. I published the flow model data from the manufacturer in the Technical Articles at http://www.y-blocksforever.com A bit pricey because of the tooling and effort to produce them, but SpeedSmith turned the corner this month. Their flow numbers are about 15% better than previously published ported Cast Iron Heads, and will improve with the production castings.
And Y-Block Aluminum Timing Covers have been out for about a year and Aluminum Water Pumps are slated to be completed this Spring. MSD is coming out with a Billet Aluminum Distributor. the Y-Block Phenominon is picking up steam.
Is the 239 I have worth keeping? My truck was built in Michigan (not Memphis as I would have hoped) so it should have the Detroit motor. I wonder if the intake that is on the Ford-Y-Block.com homepage would even fit my engine. I see a 302 and atomatic for sale in my area for $400. I think that is the way to go!

What I meant was, "No Other Modern Intakes" for the
Y-Block, not that there weren't any at all...

Glenn, Whether your truck has the Cleveland or not is determined by when the engine was assembled. I am assuming you have a '54 239. The Cleveland engines were used midway through the year. I have not yet found a date for the switch over. Look on your block. If it is a Cleveland it will have a big 'C' around a little 'F' for Cleveland Foundry. The sure way to tell is the 13 tooth versus a 14 tooth gear distributor.
Should you keep the 239? Fer sure!!!!
