One would think that rebuilding a steering box yourself will not only replace seals but take the 'slop' out of the box as our beloved fords are known for. However, the rebuild kits i've seen look to only have seals. Im sure there are bushings and other wearable items that need replacement but I am not sure as i've never done it and would prefer not to waste the time and or money rebuilding a sloppy box with fresh seals. It kind of defeats the purpose.
Does anyone know off hand either from experience or from testimony that rebuilding a box will in fact tighten it up? I could buy one already rebuilt but for $65 from the junkyard and a rebuild kit for like $15 I just saved myself a whole buncha money! I'm a big DIYer but time is also money so if this isn't going to work, i'd rather just spend the extra and have it done right. My box is just sloppy.
Not knowing what box you are talking about ? You would need a new or good bottom bushing, a good shaft & correct adjustment to tighten it up.
Guess my signature has been turned off?
The truck is a 96 F-250 (diesel). I just replaced the ball joints in the spring and the mechanic who is my friend aligned it but also noted there was play in the box. I wasn't aware there are different boxes for these trucks...how does one tell?
Thanks,
Al

No, there is just one for your year/model truck. I'd find out the procedure for adjusting the box and go from there.
