I have no idea what a smart box is. We have been watching this problem it only occurrs if the fuel is below a half a tank. so I'm leaning toward a fuel problem.
this problem it only occurs if the fuel is below a half a tank.
That usually means the fuel pump is going bad. The fuel in the tank act like a heat sink to keep the FP cool. When below a 1/2 tank, the FP is not submerged in the fuel so the FP runs a lot hotter and shuts down.
Changed the plugs and fuel filter neither had been changed but looked ok for the miles. It has been a few weeks no problems. She parks inside but the temps have been way below normal with only one day this month above freezing so we will see if it comes back when it warms up.
It's back and worse than ever. It had only happened once in the last year but started this week and happened 5 time in just a few miles.
The engine dies or shuts off just like turning the key off. No codes. Pull over put it in park and the engine will restart.
I don't know where to start fuel pump 500$???? cam sensor??? crank sensor???? any ideas.

Take a fuel pressure reading the next time it shuts down, without trying to start the engine and with the key off. I believe the static pressure should be more than 32 pounds. Running should be about 40 pounds.
I had some time today. Put a fuel presure guage on it. Key on engine off 50psi engine on 55psi. Let it idle for a good time it died. No fuel presure. Turn key off and back on 50 psi start the engine 55psi again, Watched just for a 15 or 20 minutes presure starts to drop finally zero. Turn the key off back on and it starts right back up 55psi.
Is there a fuel pump controller or is it done thru the ECM? I have been told there is but I can not find any thing.
Ive had stuff for an oil change so I went a head and changed the oil today. Now it will not shut down i let it idle for an about an hour. Before it would die after about 15 minutes.
HELP i'm not really liking a 500$ fuel pump if it is not needed!!!!!!
Seems the pump works. There may be some type of control circuit malfunction.
The fuel pump seems to be the problem, from your description. Rock auto has them at a reasonable price as does the discount parts stores. For a lot less than $500. The problem is all the work you have to do to get the pump out and back in. Run the truck to near empty before starting the job and it will be a bit easier, just time consuming.
It's an 2004 with a 5.4 does it have FPDM???? If so where is it. I have taken the spare out and do not see any type of controler.
I really think it some electrical issue and not the pump it's self. It losses pressure and stops but you can turn the key off and back on and have 50 psi or 55psi with the engine running.
No I have not. Can you explain how and where it's located? Would this cause the sudden pressure drop and reset with the the key being turned off and back on. Is it electronically controled?
Looked over the wiring today some chaffing of the outer cover no breaks. Started researching relays. R203 PCM relay controls fuse 32,33,34 fuel pump relay fuel pump PCM solenoids and sensors per the manual.
I replaced this relay when this problem started a year or so ago.
manual says R301 thru R305 are not servicable. But 303 is a fuel pump relay. description is fuel pump shut off switch, PCM, fuel pump monitor, and fuel pump.
Any clue where this would be.
I'm covinced the pump is good and it is an electrical issue. If it was the pump it would be more in consistant.
When it does quit you just turn the key off and back on and it restarts right away. Like some circuit is being reset. If it was the pump it would not always restart right away????????????
