I am looking at buying a 2011 F-350 and have built my truck at edmunds.com to find the "invoice pricing". Is that really what the dealership is paying or are people getting these trucks for less than that?
I have X Plan pricing, and the dealer has to show the invoice to you. Edmunds is pretty much on the price for invoice. The only thing not included is the FDAF/LMDA Assess (Dealer Advertising Share I believe) and Fuel Charge. The FDAF I saw was $672 and the Fuel Charge will vary. The avg Fuel Charge was around $80.00.
When looking at Edmunds, add those two numbers (Edmunds already includes destination) to the invoice price, and you will have the actual dealer invoice price.

Is "what is the dealer paying for these trucks" the question?
I don't know the numbers anymore, but, let me give you some information..
Let's say the dealer pays invoice.
There also is an allowance for flooring expense (approx 3%)
If they make a sales quota, they get a bonus,
if they finance it for you, bonus.
etc.
So, if they sell it to you at invoice, they. They still make money...

I had a feeling there were little things in there that we as consumers don't see that allow them to still make money even if they sell at invoice. Thanks for the info!

Yes there are. The invoice also does show hold back, this is money the manufacturer pays the dealer to sell the vehicle. Hold back on the invoice I saw was around $1500 on an invoice price of $52K.
The dealer does need to make some money on the transactions, I have no problem with this.
Jeffphol is right on the holdback. I saw an actual for a F350 Lariat. It was $1,700. I typically order and go into the deal clean (no trades or financiing). Depending on the dealer, you should be able to get the price somewhere under invoice. Back when the economy was really bad, I had two dealers willing to split the holdback with me. Just be careful about whether they have an allocation to order a vehicle. If they don't, it could hold up your order for quite a while.
As was also mentioned, Edmunds does show destination ($975 is typical) but does not show the advertising fee ($672 in my area) and the fuel charge ($85.02 in my area). I also heard that dealers have been instructed to grant incentives at the time of order, not just when the vehicle is bought.
This is a business transaction. Here is a saying I use all the time, "the dealer's job is to separate me from my money, my job is to make sure that doesn't happen!" And don't be afraid to walk... Find a dealer you are comfortable with.

Agree with all of this (I am actually the JeffPohl post?, did that from my phone, should have been VAJeff...). It is all a negotiation. You want the best price possible, but keep in mind the dealer does have to make some money off the transaction as well. Sometimes it may be worth a little more if you feel you can trust the dealer "post sale" to take care of you. Best to be armed with as much knowledge as possible going into it.
Been reading you guys for a while. So I finally ordered one yesterday. But the dealer wouldn't show me the invoice. I was told I'll be eligible for all the discounts and rebates at the time of delivery. Since I put a down a deposit, I was told that I would'nt lose any existing rebates. Does this sound typical? Advice?
I think the dealership should show you the invoice...if not they have something to hide in my opinion. I am also wondering about your deposit and why? I didn't put anything down when I bought my truck..no pre-credit check...and I drove and old truck when I pulled into the dealership..so it wasn't like the dealership saw I had any money. I am not getting on you for putting a deposit down on your truck...just think it's not needed.

Ordered 4 vehicles thru the years, even over the phone.
Never placed a deposit......
Either x-plan, or around invoice.....
Smaller dealers that do lots of phone sales....... Willing to deal.
One dealer sells 1500 units (all models) in a town od 3500 people. Probably not all local purchases Shop around if needed
In my opinion the dealers invoice is a joke. Look at all of the overhead a dealer has and then think how they manage to pay for all of that when they are only making $100.00 on you.
In whatever business your in do you tell your customers what your real cost is?
I think you have to be happy with the price your willing to pay and roll on. Your always going to hear of someone who got a better deal.
Big Sarge, I was told that the deposit would allow the dealership to claim "an existing sale" in case the rebate offers were withdrawn. If a bigger rebate is offered before I take delivery, then I would qualify for that too. At least that is what I was told.
Sparkypoo has a point. I guess you make your deal and move on. After all, I'll be in this truck for at least 10 years, (I've had my 97 F350 for 13 years).
