Not sure if I made the right title for this, but we'll see.
I recently bought a '93 Bronco with a 5.8 in it. I've had it for about 3 weeks now, and this problem just started this morning (After our first snow storm, I'm wondering if snow leaked somewhere it shouldn't have). After starting the car, I turned on the headlights. As usual, it started chiming because I still had the door open. However, when I closed the door, the lights on the ceiling turned off, and the headlight chime kept going. I opened and shut the door a few times to see if the switch was malfunctioning or something, but that didn't seem to be the case because the lights were turning on and off. I restarted the car, this time with the door closed and lamps off. After it started and wasn't chiming anymore, I turned on the lights, and the chime starts going again. Does anyone have any thoughts to why this might be happening? I know it's not a burnt out bulb or anything, I checked them all, so now I'm stumped. It'd be nice to be able to drive at night without having this darn chime doing all the time!
Oh just let it be... it will go away, mine did the same after i did some fordings, it's probably caused by some sort of short. But seriously, get a diagram and check what could be going on.
The chime module is triggered by several different switches including the seat belt reminder and the "key-is-still-in-the-ignition-you-dope" trigger. I personally hate the stupid things and remove them. However, the trigger from the headlight switch to the chime module is a BROWN wire. Interestingly enough, the same wiring feeds the taillights and the parking lights so if the parking lights go off the chime SHOULD stop. The problem is most likely closer to the chime module since any short between the various trigger switches could leave the chime to blare away. My suggestion would be to check the driver's door switch. This switch SHOULD have a rubber boot over the actuator in the door jamb however, they tend to dry rot and fall off leaving the switch exposed to every from of moisture and crud that comes in through the driver's door.
I think I may have some shorts somewhere in that system. I just went out there to drive somewhere, and obviously at night I need the lights, and it was not chiming. I don't know if this is how the 93 broncos are setup, but here's how my chime operates:
If the door is open, keys in ignition, car off, chime will operate only if you wiggle the key around a little bit, or sometimes will not operate at all. If the lights are on, door open weather it's on or off, it will chime, however if the car is on, lights off, and you open the door, it will not chime. Sorry if that was a little confusing. Just thought I'd bring that up. Anyway, we'll see what happens. If it had a buzzer like the 80s truck I might not be so annoyed by it. I like those for some reason.
Sounds like the "key in the ignition" trigger is a bit screwy.
Key in the ignition/engine off:
Chimes on driver door open
Chimes on light switch in any ON position
Key in the ignition/engine on:
Chimes at start up if driver's seat belt is not latched
Chimes on driver door open
The whole point is that it reminds you the lights are still on whether the engine is running or not... kind of annoying if you hop out with the lights on to lock or unlock front hubs.
The "keys in the ignition" reminder only comes when the door is open and the engine is not running. The assumption being that you remembered to turn the engine off but you forgot to pull the keys.
The seat belt trigger is only at start up for a few seconds. Then it quits until the engine is shut down and it resets.
