Has your e40d blown up?

If so what have you broken, or what is common to break on these trans? I am going to set mine up for 500whp, and a lot of abuse. This truck will see a lot of driveline shock from the desert. If I had to put it in perspective it is like driving a manual trans down the freeway and putting your foot the floor while smashing the clutch in and out as fast as you can for hundreds of miles. Basically I just want to know what to look for to upgrade and plan to budget. I MAY end up going with a BTS or JW (John assured me his trans would take this abuse) but I would rather build it myself and teach myself. I would rather spend 2k break something, and spend another 2k upgrading everything to have it meet me needs then buy a JW or BTS

Minute 1:27 - 1:35 you can kind of hear what the drive line goes through and 1:58 - 2:06

You'll want a torque converter unlock switch.

I was part of the team that put an E4OD in a Class 8 truck about 15 years ago. We broke a lot of parts, including driveshafts, until we kept the torque converter unlocked on the rough stuff. We allowed the driver to lock the converter on "smooth" roads, ie, ones that are not doing what you show in the video.

There were quite a few internal mods, too, but I wasn't part of that so I don't have particulars of what was beefed up. They were also making quite a bit more horsepower than you're aiming for.

Interesting. I was thinking about doing that anyways because I don't want to pay for those tc lock up controllers. Never occured to me to keep it unlocked in the rough because of all the extra heat, but it seems like a good idea now that I think of it. The truck must have had one massive trans cooler on it though. Would it happen to have been one of the rough rider trucks?

Thanks for your help Mark,
-Mikey

No one else knows what they have broke? It seems like this subject is either hush hush, or people just drop the truck off somewhere and have someone fix it for them with no idea what they are doing. lol

It's very easy to wire up a 3-way on/off/on switch into the TCC circuit to manually override the PCM. I had one in my Bronco and it worked perfectly.

Yes it was. It was Enduro Racing, Dave Ashley and Dan Smith.
