Broken d50 TTB

I hear almost every day on the diesel forums how weak a D50 TTB is, but who has actually broke one, and what were you doing when you broke it?

I am planning on running coilovers and extending stuff so I am not worried about the retarded ford leaf spring design . I love beams and TTB, just need to know what everyone else has broken

Thanks,
-Mikey

Interesting, good thing I am getting rid of those spring perches and reinforcing the beams.

I know other people have had to have broke something

Haha like I do my other truck . I am more concerned with the 4x parts because I have never really gone 4x'ing lol. I want the truck to be capable of some decent crawling with out worrying about breaking stuff.

do you think that rust could have any thing to do with the breaking ?

My 94 broke in the same place, yea you could blame rust but maybe not like you'd think. Was more cause and effect, mine broke just inboard of the spring too.
It rips across the bottom and straight up the front side behind the inner u-bolt nicely out of view, drivers side TB arm snaps dumping front of truck on ground.

I wondered why it happen until I got to looking at it, two bolts attach the lower rear part of the arm to the pig. The washers on those two bolts rusted away, crumbled and fell out likely faster due the added strain of plowing snow.

Well with those two bolts now loose not holding a dang thing, that allowed the TB arm to flex/move, bolts integral to complete the box sectioning effect that was no longer a solid box, flexing just enough until it ripped at the most likely point.

You can bet I keep a close eye on them two bolts on both trucks, make sure they are tight and doing their job!

Kinda freaks a guy out just a tad when the truck suddenly drops, slams on the ground while plowing snow
Didn't take long and wasn't hard to fix, was rather unexpected though!!

Can't say that i broke my D50, but i can say i helped snap 1 of the 2 bolts that hold the Left axle pivot bracket to the frame and part of the eyelit of the bracket to the frame snapped clean off. Scariest thing ever going 40 mph on the road hit a small bump and the entire truck turned into a HUGE vibrator i was saying oooohhhh shiiiiiittt while vibrating in the truck til i got over somewhat safely and stopped. What possible caused the bracket to fail after 18 yrs? Possibly the truck being a snow plow since new in ND and me trying to off-road here in VA along w/ killing curbs just cause i could

I wrench semi-pro, so I see a lot of other people's screw ups. As such, I've seen a lot of snapped D44/D50TTB axle shafts. Yes, I do lump them into one category, as they've all snapped at the carrier. If you want to jump your truck, that is a huge shock load, and I forsee a LOT of practice changing shafts in the desert.

As to the beams themselves breaking, I haven't seen any of that.

My f250 d44hd snapped the midshaft right at the splines But I was tring to ramrod it up a hill that even a little Jeep was having a little trouble with because of the angles involved I have a powertrax locker in that axle and just put to much pressure on it 6500Lb trucks are not easy on their feet but it did drive home on it's own and serves DD duties until I find a replacement shaft for it. Ford Powah!!

I won't be running 4wd in the desert at all so that should not be a worry. I am also going to be running all custom shafts, possible 300m but most likely 4340 chromoly shafts. 35 spline for the outters. Good to know I need to look into it more. I may resleeve the front diff so I can run larger 35 spline shafts. It has been done before.

Add a +1 to the list, POS axle, barely 500k miles and yep, front side crack, right up along the inner u-bolt, drat! Gah! It does a lot of plowing and hauling and has even had a few blasts through Death Valley so I can't really fault the axe, and its 22 years old. I'll see about jacking up the pumpkin and putting some big pressure on it to mash it back into place then welding it up until I can get a replacement.

I do have a housing from a 1996 F350 that might be the same, have to call a bone yard to see if it cross references. Likely I'll weld it and add a small doubler plate to help it out a bit.

wow! how the heck did i miss this for 3 months??

rust had nothing to do with it, since the truck was only 18 months old and only had 18,000 miles on it at the time the axle broke.

Hmm, I wonder if something else was in rough shape, I've had all four wheels slipping on clean pavement moving a heavy GN trailer up a hill in 4L
