Got a friend parting out a 92+ something f150. I always thought of swapping over to maf with my 351w. Is it plug and play? What stuff should i get from it?
You've got a couple issues here that I see. First one - MAF was first standard on the 5.0L in '94 and the 5.8L in '96. If your buddy's truck is a '92, then it should still be speed density, but there has been some debate on this. Some trucks with CA emmissions may have gotten it sooner. Even if he did have a truck with MAF, you would have to swap the computer, complete underhood wiring harness, and engine harness to make it work. The problem with that is that the '92 and up harnesses are different than the older ones and it wouldn't fit in your truck. Your best alternative for MAF would probably be to get a 5.0L Mustang MAF ECM and add the necessary injector and MAF sensor wiring to your existing harness. It will also require repinning the 60-pin connector at the ECM as many of the signal locations are different. It won't be a small or simple project no matter which way you go.
His truck is maf for sure. It has the two tubes into one and the different air box. Is the engine harness just the different part? Or does it extend past that. I was wondering because i'm sure i could get all the harnesses off him. Or are injector plugs and such different?
*edit*
If i have to repin it doesn't seem that hard to do, do you have to re-solder the pins, or pull em out and put them back in. I'm up for either.
The engine harness is completely different and it plugs into the main underhood harness - which is also completely different. Nothing similar about them. It could be MADE to fit, but it would take some serious electrical and Ford EFI knowledge to make it happen. You would essentially be rewiring the entire truck. It's just not worth it. There are easier ways to get MAF. You've got another issue to contend with also that I just thought of. If his truck has MAF, my money says it also has the 4R70W 4-speed electronic transmission. Your '91 wouldn't. If you try to run the ECM out of that truck without that transmission, it will throw a fit.
You got a point it's an auto. What would be the easier way to swap to maf then? I can at-least grab the airbox, and tube from this truck, and possibly maf sensor?
Use a Fox Mustang computer, add the sequential injector and MAF wiring into your existing harness, and repin the ECM connector. Do a search for "mass air conversion". The procedure has been documented here a few different times.
I've got a Mustang A9L EEC, Mustang injector harness, an aftermarket (Edelbrock Performer upper/knockoff lower) EFI manifold for a 5.8, and some other miscellaneous MAF EFI parts - if you're interested PM me.
