DEF Question

Ok so being that I will soon be an owner of a diesel engine that will require DEF, I have some questions:
Are any of you having issues finding DEF around town?

Roughly how many miles are you getting on a tank of DEF while just driving around town, and towing?

Roughly how much does DEF cost per gallon? I hear around $6.00. Does this sound right?

Sorry if this has been asked. I tried searching the forums for blogs on this and couldnt find anything.
Thanks.

Lots of places to find DEF. Any auto parts store or dealer. People who are towing heavy use the most at about 1000 miles per gallon. People who use the least are getting about 1700 miles per gallon. Here's a link to O'Reilly's List: Diesel Exhaust Fluid | O'Reilly Auto Parts

Price is $12 for 2.5 gallons (about $5/gallon). Cheap and easy.

There are many threads about the DEF usage and cost. Epic is right on the money with the costs and I get about 1200 miles to a gallon of DEF.

Regards

I am going on 2200 miles and have not had any warning for refill yet. I do have 2.5 gallons in my bed but have realized I don't need to carry it around. It's pretty easy to find and about $11 for 2.5 gallons as stated above.

I'm sitting at 2300 miles and checked it today after reading this thread. Mine is now showing less than half. I'm convinced that we don't get a full tank from the factory/dealer most of the time.

I have 3600 miles on the truck and had less than half full (per the instrument panel) when I checked on Monday. Stopped by O'Reilly's today and bought 2.5 gal for $12.99 because we are going on a 1800 mile round trip next week.

The bottom line is that I do not know if it was full when I bought the truck and I only towed my 4000# boat a few times, so you should probably look up the information in the other posts and draw your own conclusion.

BTW - The truck did not take the whole 2.5 gal. It is likely that your mileage will vary based on all of the variables.

O'Reilly's really beats the Ford price!

Wow, DEF at O'Reilly's really beats Ford's price - $12 vs $20 for 2.5 gals. Glad I checked in on this thread. Here in Kalifornia O'Reilly's is known as Kragen Auto Parts. I had to refill my F250 SD 4x4 CC at just over 5,000 miles. I pull a 36' 5'er toyhauler but only a fraction of the mileage stated.
Thanks for the tip on other DEF sellers. We should be seeing it in the big box stores, i.e. Wal-Mart soon, if its not already there.

I bought my first DEF container at Ford so I would have the hose with the gasket on it. Then I will buy my future DEF from local auto part stores and use the Ford hose with it.

Awesome. Sounds like DEF is not as expensive as I feared. I like the idea of buy the frist one from ford that way I will have a container with a hose. Appreciate everyone taking time to answer my post.

The 2.5 gallon containers of DEF from all the sources mentioned all come with a filler hose. I have used two containers so far with no problems. I keep the empty containers because I buy 5 gallons from Pilot for $2.79 a gallon and refill them.

I got the "less than half full" indication at 2650 miles at which time I put in 2 @ 1Gal which I bought from the dealer.

They didn't have 2.5 gal and I had looked all over the place for it (I started a thread on this, if you want you can read about my DEF experiences).

I don't know if the tank was full when I got the truck. If it was and I used 2.5 gal in 2650 miles I should see half full indication again at 4770 miles. I'm currently at 4750 and haven't seen it yet.

Just had my first oil change at the dealer at 5000 miles 3 days ago and I had like 400 miles of def left. First fill is free and my dealer did my first oil change at$ 20 off. $65 for tank of def and oil change.

I have 1800 miles, 800 of them towing, and I am under half. Don't know when I went below half because I didn't check it until I had 1800.
