I think it is a member of this site that put a '10 box on a '99 or something like that, looked really good. As long as you don't want to use your stock tailgate I think you can go all the way to new. Also F150 boxes and gates will work '97-'03.
I have put 2 2011 superduty take off boxes on older superdutys which I own. One is a 99 the other is a 2000. They bolt right up to the frame the same, but wiring needs to be worked over a little to work. Bumpers are also a direct bolt on.
For the fuel filler tube, you need 3 self tapping screws to make it work. For the wiring with the newer tail lights, the simple way is to use your old tail light harness and splice the newer pigtails on for the reverse lights. For the bumper you need to drill a small hole left of the license plate for access to remove the spare tire. Simple Enough????
I found the boxes in the correct colors I needed and atleast the white and red colors are the same as the older trucks. The wheel well arch is slightly different but not even noticable when mounted on the truck. If you have a plastic bed liner , it fits the same as well. For pics you might search my old posts. New bed= new metal, new paint, no wear, perfect condition. Can not get much better than that.

Tailgates are interchangeable from the F150 97 to 03, but the boxes are different.
