How is everyone going about hand calculating their mileage?
The most accurate methods?

I used to keep a little notepad in my glovebox with 3 columns.
1. Mileage
2. Gallons
3. MPG

To calculate your MPG substract your mileage from the prior mileage. Divide that result from with your total gallons at fillup to get the mpg. After so many entries you can add up all the mpg's and divide it by the number of entries to get your average mpg. If you have an IPOD touch there's a free gas app called Gas Chubby which is what I use. Gas Chubby also pops up reminders for service ie. oil changes, filter changes, etc.

I exported my gas calculations from my app into a pdf file so you can see an example of what it looks like.

I use an Excel spreadsheet to calculate mileage by the tank and cumulative, cost per mile by the tank and cumulative and also to keep a running total of all maintenance and repair costs. I also added a comments column so I know when I was pulling my 13,500 pound 5th wheel trailer and that is why the MPG was so low for that tank. I am averaging 13.20 MPG with a .23 cost per mile.

I have excel spreadsheet on my smartphone. I have an ongoing "hand calculation" and also the "lie-o-meters" numbers. Just like others, I have a rather live view of my costs. It has really come in handy on trips. It has confirmed that the lie-meter is and was not that far off on the longer trips.

Yeah my Lie-o-Meter is off by about 2mpg more than what it really is.

The Gas Chubby app is for both the IPOD touch and Iphone. It's free or you can get the ad free for a couple bucks.

I just use the trip a, reset at each fillup. Then take the fuel ticket gallons and divide the two.
