There is a special ford tool and proceedure for this job. Do you have the Ford OEM manuals on CD available at the online store? They are a good source for this type of detailed info.
I didn't pull out the pin when I bled the brakes on my '79, and they bled just fine. I do have the shop manual on CD I got through the store here on the web (VERY handy) and it does tell you to pull it out, but if you don't have the Ford tool or some type of homemade tool it is kinda hard to do. I was too lazy to go buy the tool or make one. One thing the manual says is that if the pin is not pulled out then the brake warning light might come on after bleeding, but pumping the brakes a few times should re-center the pin and fix it. The light did not come on in my case. One thing which did greatly improve my braking ability after replacing the booster, master cylinder, lines, hoses and front calipers was carefully adjusting (slightly lengthening) the plunger on the booster which goes into the MC. You have to be really careful not to make it too long however or you are gonna blow out your MC. Just a slight adjustment (a few turns on the adjusting nut) made a world of difference in my stopping ability. The shop CD has the exact specs for the length that the plunger rod is supposed to be.

the way my documentation read, you had to pull that pin to bleed the front, so when I pulled it, (I made up a tool) it actually PREVENTED me from being able to bleed the front calipers. It completely stopped the flow. I removed my tool, and it bled just fine.......
what would the length of the master cylinder rod be on a 75 f-100 4x4 with drum brakes all around??? i replaced my master cylinder and brake booster at different times and couldnt find any exact measurements for the rod. if anyone has the cd and could post the specs i would appreciate it a lot. i just havent got around or have the money right now to buy the cd manual. thanks
