Steering problem?

I recently had this problem and cant figure it out? I have a 77 f100 with power steering and if I turn the wheel, it stays the way I turn it, I was told to put it on jack stands and check and see if I can turn the wheels by pushing on them, to see if maybe (from it siting) the grease dryed up, I did this and they move but not easily, I was also told to make sure my power steering gears arent to tight, but am not sure how tight they area suposed to be? Any opinions would be great! Thanks

you might want to check your king-pins and see if they are getting enough grease. If not you will probably want to think about replacing them , that is , if they have plenty of grease.
They aren't too expensive , but can be a real pain to remove if frozen in the spindle.

Good luck, hope this helps you
Don

If it is the kingpins take it to a shop, it will require special tools to do the job right.

how long will the fix be? Is it costly? Also is there a way I can grease them myself? I have a chilton and all the tools required (except the special ones) Is it hard to do?

Greasing them is part of normal scheduled maintenance. If you can get them to take grease it "may" help. Repair is a one day affair and cost can vary, get a couple of estimates. I have slept way to many times since I had this done, so I do not remember the actual cost. I can't even guess but somebody may be able to. You still have to call the shops to find out what it runs in your area.

Take your truck to a front end man that understands TIB to get it checked out.

If I remember correctly, It only took the shop a few hours to do it , and the cost including parts was about 300 dollars. If you are pretty mechanically inclined , you can do it yourself and the cost will be about 1/3 of that. You really don't need no special tools to do the job, unless the kingpin is loose in the axle, in that case the axle needs to be sleeved. To remove the kingpin if it is froze in the axle, a big hammer usually does the trick.

Good luck,
Don
