02 f350 single rear wheel, 153k miles, auto trans. jsut started doing this the other day. noticed probably a week ago it was shifting a little harder. then the other day after slowing down to turn into my neighborhood, i could tell it was in first, then would to shift out at all. did it again the other day after stopping at a light. had to go up to about 2200 rpm to get it to shift out of 1st. did it again today, wound it up a little and let off easy and it fell in, almost like shifting a manaul w/o clutch- had to find the right speed. no blinking od light. sometimes it shifts hard, others it is jsut fine. what is my issue? fluid level is good. could it be the valve body?
Has it ever had an oil and filter change? If not, it is way passed do. There are instructions here that someone will chime in with. Not too hard to do in your garage and will cost less than 150.00 for the oil and filter. It takes 19-20 qts. of trans oil When you have your pan off to change the filter. (gaskets is reuseable) you can look at your valves. Check your oil and see if it smells burnt. (not a good sign).
i do need to change the fluid. however, the level is fine and it does not smell burnt. it is shifting harder than it did and sometimes sticking in first. these hard shifts came out of nowhere. could the no shift from 1-2 be the valve body? i dont want to be buying a new trans
Samething happened to me. Changed fluid and filter. And still did it. So got me a new transmission. But my OD light was flashing. Call Brian at Brians Truck Shop great help
Since your tranny needs a fluid change I'd go and do a flush with a Mercon V type fluid before I'd do anything else. If the bad shifting clears up or not you know where you stand.
I was having similar issues with mine. Thought the trans was going. I changed to a JW valve body and it went away. I talked to some of the PSD gurus and the consensus was that the springs in the valve body were just worn out and sticking. Or something like that anyway. Riffraff Diesel: John Wood 4R100 Valve Body

These are the valves that are prone to stick in the accumulator VB.
The OEM are aluminum and replacements are steel. I would imagine JW or BTS woud use these in their VB's also to prevent this problem. I did!
