What might cause this problem on my 82-F-100-4.9L factory carb. When I start it cold I press the pedal all the way to floor once this engages the choke(right) anyway truck starts right up holds a high idol until I pat the pedal then it drops to a normal idol as long as I do this the truck dosent smoke at all while driveing. when the motor is warm I dont have to touch the pedal at all still starts right up but smokes pretty bad while driveing and at idol. When it smokes it also runs rough.I have checked the choke when its smokeing but its open like it should be when motor is warm right? The motor also has a lifter tapping but its been doing that for years its PO was my father who never got around to fixing that.any ideas ?Thanks in advance.
I'd check the air\fuel mixture and make sure they're set. I believe you screw them all the way in then back them out about 1 1/2 turns each, then fine tune til it runs the best. After that I would make sure your choke is adjusted properly and that everything it needs to operate is there (some use a wire off the alternator to get power; others use a metal tube that comes from near the exhaust manifold to heat the choke thermostat so it can work).
Years ago I had a similar problem. Except my electric choke has never worked right (might help to hook the power wire up...lol), so I've always had to manually raise the idle to about 1200-1400RPM to warm it up. But what mine would do is after a bit of driving, it'd start loading up. It'd smoke, run rough, and not have much power.
The choke plate wasn't opening enough, causing a rich condition. I solved my problem (keep in mind my choke is currently nonfunctional) by loosening the three screws that hold the housing in place and rotating it til the choke plate is vertical, or completely open. Haven't had the problem with loading up since. Due to not having a working choke, I have to baby it a little when I'm first starting it up each day (I have to lightly rev it til it warms up just enough to stay running, but that's nothing big.
THANKS kirby My choke has the metal tube that comes from the manifold I think its called stove pipe? its also got a wire that comes of the black cap on the back of the choke but the wire isnt connected I cant find any connecter that it will plug into . were dose it go?
The choke wire hooks to the back of the alternator, as odd as that sounds.....
Brainfart keeps me from recalling what the alt terminal is labeled as, but "sta" seems to be the one.
