Emptying fuel tank

Emptying fuel tank
I'm ready to fire up my rebuilt 5.0L tomorrow. Today I tried emptying the stale fuel out of my front tank by disconnecting the fuel line before the filter. I thought since the pumps couldn't build pressure that they would continue to run. They cycled on for a couple seconds and shut off. What do I need to do to make this work? Also how do I be sure all the fuel lines are primed full of fuel before I crank? I don't want to crank any longer than necessary on this new engine.
Thanks

The EEC cuts off the FP if the PIP (sensor inside the distributor) doesn't show that the engine is turning. Check the wiring diagram and you'll find a FP wire at the EEC TEST connector near the L hood hinge - you can power/ground (check the diagram) that terminal to make the FP run continuously.
To reprime the system, just cycle the key a few times until you hear the FP load up. To be sure, just press the Schrader valve on the fuel rail to see if gas squirts out.

Yep, it worked. Looked at the schematics and found the wire you spoke of (tan/green) terminating at the test station. I jumpered to ground and the pumps stayed running. I'm glad I did this because I discovered my front tank pump is inop. I know it ran when I pulled the engine about a year ago. Ground/gummed up?? Tried banging on the tank thinking that might jar something loose but it's still a no-go. I spose I'll have to drop the tank and test the pump. Plan on breaking the engine in this afternoon. I got good flow and pressure from the rear pump so I'll rely on this one for the start-up.
