If you put headers in your ford, don't spare the cash on the ceramic coated HD headers. they're really worth it. Keeps from cooking everything inside the hood. They're about $300 but worth every bit. Help, what bolts do you undo to roll out the whole front end I-beams to do the rebuild? Also, anyone familiar with rear ends for some better top end on a 68 f100 stock 3spd granny? Hona-Drive anyone, worth it? Don't really want to lose the 1st for climbing which that granny is good for!
As for the I-beams, rolling them out is easy (at least to me, I've done it a few times on different trucks).
Hardest part is getting the springs loose. Of course, make sure your truck is supported really really well! (duh! ) There is a clip with 2 bolts/nuts (1/2" I think) holding the spring to the frame cap. All you need to take apart after that is the brake line, the big castle nut on the back of the radius arm, and the pivot bolt on the end of the I-beam.
Push the pivot-end of the I-beam down out of the frame, and slowly move the hub assembly back and forth to pull the radius arm out of it's support.
Getting it back in in one peice takes a little more work, and a lot more patience
Patience...When I converted to power disk getting everytinhg apart was easy. Going back togather was another strory. After changing the pivot bushings the the pivot arm and the frame don't line up as easily, take your time. I had to put the radius arms on with no outer washer to seat the bushings then take the nuts off replace washers and re-tighten. The prothane bushings are nice but they dont like to flex during instalation.
