What does pulling the **** out on the 2w, 4wH, and 4wl do. I can not find information in the manual. I know it does something, or it would not work like the fog light switch.
Pulling the 4wd **** out locks the rear differential to like a posi-traction diff. Assuming you have that electronic locking rear diff with the 3.55 gears. If you go into the truck applications on instrument panel u will see the illustration showing the rear diff being locked with an icon

Does like he says, but the gears don't matter. Does the same with them all.
From what i have read, the ELD will engage in 2 or 4 wheel drive when the **** is pulled and the vehicle meets certain criteria. Speed I believe needs to be below 25 mph and I think i also read that the front wheels cannot be turned in excess of a certain number of degrees.
The auto/manual locking hubs work like this. In auto mode when the truck's internal **** is moved 4H or 4L the front wheels are locked automatically. You can also lock them manually by going out and turning the wheel selector to the lock position. This allows you to manually lock the front end in case of a failure of the auto feature.
Footnote: I think they built the manual locking capability into the auto locking feature because many of us who have driven heavily in 4 wheel mode will tell you stories of the auto locking either not engaging or staying engaged after coming out of 4WD. I haven't read the technical specs on how the engagement process is done (vacuum or electric) but I do like the feature of being able to manually lock the hubs.
If you do lock the hubs manually but do not select 4H or 4L in the truck, the front shafts from the front transfer case will be engaged but you will not have power to the wheels. In the old days with manual lockers, we were told to do this occassionally to ensure the mechansim was "exercised".
I didn't know they still offered that...I haven't seen that feature in a LONG time except for in the Cabellas edition in 08 r 09 models.
I personally really liked the manual pull stick that used to be available.
