I found a really good page that had alot of good information on it about the FICM. It mentioned that some of the seven screw FICM's (older model) had more durable components that were rated for more voltage. I'll try to find it.
Swamps diesel sells FICM's with heavier components, along with the 58 volt mod. Read their core charge statement carefully before deciding to buy one though. Basicly if you have ever taken your FICM apart to reflow the solder they reserve the right to refuse your full core charge refund.
Hey thanks guys. Can't afford buy something different and its tough enough to keep this one going down the road at the cost of fuel here.150 miles to and from work per day = too much damn $$$
Yea Yea, I have a 96 olds cutlass. p.o.s. It was given to me at no cost untill the trans dumped on me. Invest the $2000 rebuild to have more problems with wiring under hood 8 mos later. Currently been in shop for 2 months
Maybe i should try to sell car to guy at repair shop (he did and knows that the motor and trans are good) at a loss and go get me a FOCUS
To bad they don't offer a diesel engine in those. At $3.25/gal not good idea.
Hubler that 58 volt mod you have, is that swamps ficm? I like it...
No I did mine myself about 20,000 miles ago for 50 cents. It still has all of the stock components. I just soldered another resistor onto it. I forget where I found the DIY instructions but I know it was on another forum.
Well I performed the test on the ficm 3 or 4 times. Every test passed at 48 volts. However, the temps were up today and after tests i fired the truck up and went for a drive. It still stumbles before it reaches operating temps. Guess i'll check into a stiction problem.
i have the swamps 58v it is great, truck starts great all the time, 16 degrees the other night turned over 3 times and started. idled normal, the truck was not plugged in.
you can check the voltage with a dvom if needed. i personally just used a matco termanator scanner. here is a link to the directions on swamps diesel on how to check with a dvom
