A little warm-up in the driveway, 1 mile to the freeway, 3 miles to exit, 5-6 miles of surface street with 35-50mph speed limits, 5-6 stop lights (not all red).
Stopped at a light, saw smoke near front of truck, thought it was car in front of me. A little further, stopped for another light, smoke again.. CRAP, I'm the only vehicle at the light. Smoke was coming from front left wheel well area.
Quick sweep of the gages-no indicators there is a problem-and a mental review to retrieve fire extinguisher, and plan attack for an engine fire. Smoke dissipates. Other vehicles pull up. Looking at other drivers for signs of alarm-nothing. Now I'm hemmed in, drive another mile or so before I can pull over, continue checking drivers of vehicles passing me to see if any have a panicked look on their face, or if there are any Chevy/Dodge boys pointing and laughing at the Ford-in-Flames. Nothing.
Pull over, get out. No visible smoke, but I can smell burned oil. Unable to find anything. No signs of leaks anywhere. All fluid levels normal. Drive a little further. Problem never repeats. Truck sits for 3 days, no signs of leaks on ground, can't see anything on engine.
The truck had 4443 miles when this occurred.
Will take it to the dealer to at least get the incident "on record".
maybe a puddle or some other way to splash oil up into your engine bay? I hope it's that easy to explain. I think you're on the right track though - take her in for a physical.
I thought awhile back someone had something similar happen,Their dipstick wasn't fully seated and oil was coming up and out the tube onto the motor. This is just a shot in the dark but you might want to check that your dipstick is fully seated.
