What a difference Electronic Ignition makes...

Just did that easy conversion of my trucks 302 engine to electronic ignition...I can't believe the difference it made in the smoothness of the engine. I used the Pertronix. Even with the timing closely tuned before, it always had this little "puff" sound at the tailpipe every now and then at idle....gone. Wish I'd done it sooner.

Amen, went with Duraspark ll for both 65's and really noticed an improvement when it comes to starting the 390 beast on a cold winter morning.

I ran this in my 59 Fairlane that was a street/strip style build I could run the 390 in 20* weather with no hassles. I've installed a pertronix also in my 66 f100, and will be adding a multispark box I have from procomp electronics. I'm also running this setup in my dad's 62 Galaxie w/ the procomp distributor & hi-output coil

Hey CropDuster Man....what was the ball park figure to do that? I have a 302 in my '66 and have been thinking about changing over.

Prices will range from around $80-150 depending on which pertronix unit you get. The Ignitor or Ignitor II & depending on if you replace the coil. I'm running an MSD high-voltage 12volt coil on my 66. I've got about $125 in the combo.

Thanks! That seems like a reasonable price to spend on such a time/gas saver.

Hi Mac,
I paid about $90 for the Pertronix "Ignitor", and ran it with my stock coil. It does require that you have at least 1.5 ohms with your coil...mine was right around 1.7 so it worked fine. The kit comes with a little plastic gap guage which I found was a touch too wide, so I used a slightly tighter guage and it fired up and timed easily. It was a snap, done in about 20 min.
Good luck,
Jason

I had the same great results installing a Pertronix Ignitor on my 460 that has been transplanted into my 65 f100, after I got it set up right it made a huge difference in engine performance and starting but right out of the box I could barely keep the engine running, did some online research and found out I needed to add a rubber washer from a hose as a spacer on the distributor shaft to raise the sensor to a better position, haven't had a problem since.

Hi -

I need a new distributor for a '76 Ford 300 I-6 that will be going into my '66 Ford F100. Do you think I am better off to get a new points-style distributor and retro fit it with the Pertronix kit, or should I shell out the dough for the complete Pertronix distributor? Any other ideas?

On my 65 352 installed Ignitor III w/ flamethrower coil. Easy to install and works great.

Thanks

I've been looking and Jegs has the conversion kit for my 352. I was going to ask if it really made a difference. I am glad to see my question answered before I ask! Thanks and I will let you know how mine turns out. I've been extremely fortunate in my truck 107,000 original miles. A little problem here and there but it does run great as long as I keep the choke pulled out a tiny bit. Any suggestions there? Anyways thanks.

I rebuilt the carb. and set the mixture and timing with a vacuum tester. It really smoothed out the idle and improved power.

I have made a deal with my wife....she will get what she wants for her birthday next week, and I will get the electronic ignition for my truck for my birthday in February. It's still in the 70's this week, and I would rather be driving than tinkering. February is a bit colder/wetter, so I won't regret not being able to drive a few days....depending on how my mechanical skills are shining during this procedure.
