How much is a personal decision and has a lot to do with your trucks setup (injectors, turbo, exhaust, your foot, etc...)
A pyro is a must. ATS has specs on what they say is good, has to do with turning it up a little at a time and watching the exhaust while doing a snap throttle test.
Just to put it out, mine truck barely smoked unless I was really bogged down, I turned it up one flat, got a decent boost of power. Flooring it will give a puff of black in 2nd. I'd rather not do more and waste fuel out the exhaust, and my pyro temps have been good, but your mileage will vary (literally...).

i do have a pyro, and my temps are always good. thanks for the advice- i think i'll start with 2 flats and see how it goes. i don't want to send too much fuel out the spitter, as well!
