I am going to change front and rear diff fluid but have a question. After doing a search I noticed a lot of people were using a store bought gasket. I bought one from felpro, my question is do I just scrap off all the old sealant then use the gasket or do you recommend putting some new sealant as well. Don't mean to sound stupid but this is my first time doing this job and I don't want a leak. Thanks in advance.
Steve (and Guzzle) have you sorted. I need to do my front diff, but the rear has 80,000-ish miles on it with a "silicone" gasket. I stick with Permatex brand and recently used it on my GF's '02 AWD Explorer. Used it on both diff's and no problems.
I would recommend doing it in a warm garage, not just for you, but so that the silicone sets up quickly & properly. Keep it warm overnight and you'll spend more time waiting for the silicone to skin up properly (1hr minimum).
