Has anybody installed rear disc brakes as a replacement for the drums. I was reading an artical about wilwood rear disc brakes kits, and on their web site. Just wondering if anybody has done it to their bronco. Also is there any imput on weather they will be just as safe with a lift kit and larger tires say 4 inch kit with 33 only alittle bit bigger. http://www.wilwood.com/products/kits/rpbkwipb/index.asp
I want rear disks on my bronco as well. I was thinking about picking up an 8.8 at a junk yard and building it up and then just swapping it in later. would I be able to use the same 8.8 from say a half ton pickup of the same years or does it have to be out of a bronco??
This way I can put the discs and new gears in all before its mounted .
Kemicalburns,
You should be able to do the swap to any 8.8 out of a Bronco or F-series etc.. If you have rear ABS and/or an E4OD you will have to find one with the speed sensor mounted in the top of it. Otherwise it should be a simple enough procedure.
Big 89 am I seeing the WIldwood correctly? They just replace the OEM brake drum with a retrofitted drum/rotor combination and then add the caliper? Have you priced this out yet? Asked for any references? I would be interested to find out more about this as well. My boat weighs over 2,500# and while the trailer does have surge brakes a little more stopping power wouldn't hurt my feelings any!
Yeah the wilwood package is just a straight bolt on kit. I havn't priced it out yet. If you go on their site they will email you where the nearest dealer is of their product. If your interested i found out about it from this months off road magazine (april 2003 on sale til 3/25/03) they give a lot of description and pictures of how to do it and its just a straight up swap. The on i had a link to i believe had the rear disc breaks with the e-brake built in thats the one i need but there are other disc break packages on the site too.
Stainless Steel Brakes & TSM also sell bolt-on kits, but you ALWAYS have to open the diff to pull the axles to get the drum backing plates off the tubes. And you have to be REALLY careful to read the fine print about what does and DOESN'T come in the kit - some don't include calipers, rotors, pads, or lines...
