I never really appreciated having my EZ Pass stuck to the windshield on my 06. It was just an eyesore no matter where you stuck it. I held off sticking it to the window on the new truck and found out this morning that I won't need to. I've been carrying it in the overhead sunglasses holder. Well this morning I finally got the opportunity to pay a toll and I gave it a try just leaving it stashed up there.
Wouldn't you know it the pass worked like a charm even with the steel roof over top of it. I'm pretty happy that I won't have that ugly thing stuck to my windshield anymore and just thought I would pass this little tip on.

Great tip! Do you lose the sunglasses holder when you add the sunroof?
I "use" to keep the EZ Pass inside the faring of my Electric Glide.
It would still register without a problem. Would even register inside my 5th wheel Toy Hauler or my all aluminum motorcycle trailer.
I've tried covering the fairing with multiple layer of foil and leather jackets and it still would read the tag - double charging me.

There are two types of EZ pass booths around here. The one is where you slow down and it gives you a green light saying you have just been robbed and the other one where you drive through at highway speed and you don't know you been robbed until the next statement.
Will it work with both? I too would love to get it off of the windshield.
Our "pass through" lanes are mostly 15 mph here in MD with only a couple locations that have I think 35 mph. I passed through the 15 mph during my experiment. Delaware has some full speed lanes but I don't get there very often. I'm hoping if it read it going 15 mph speed should not make a difference.
EZ Pass, TollTag, and all similar toll mechanisms use RFID. Of course it will work through plastic, aluminum, steel, paint, etc. It's RADIO . The only thing that will effectively block radio waves is something designed to do so, or something that inadvertantly has those properties. For instance, concrete is great at blocking radio. Copper mesh, or any grid or striated metal structure will affect radio waves. Glass just happens to have almost zero effect, so they recommend putting it on your windshield.
Ford doesn't use Metal Oxide windshields on any of its trucks, to my knowledge. I'm not even sure they use it on any modern cars (maybe Lincolns?). I think this technology has gone the way of the dodo.
I just happened to be over here drooling at your oil burners when I came across this thread.
This is a great idea until you get stopped for having your tag improperly mounted. Here in VA the State and Local mounties regularly hang out at the tolls for this purpose, amongst other things (state inspection stickers). I have seen people cited for not having the tag on the window. Do I like it? No...but it is well hidden behind the mirror on my 150.
I know it's nit-picky, but just thought I'd share my $.02 today.
that's nuts! the tollways are privately funded, right? the tags are optional? they don't have any identifying marks on them that LE could need in the event of a traffic stop, do they? how can they enforce a law regarding the mounting of an optional, privately-controlled identification tag? I'm blown away... normally I'm not the "screw the gov't" type, but this really has me irritated.
I've always thought it was a little outside of LE's duties as well, but EZ Pass here in VA is run by the DOT. I cannot speak towards the other states, so is it the same?
Here are their guidelines: https://www.ezpassva.com/StaticPages/FAQViolations.aspx
I don't see anything there about tag mounting regulations... but if they're handing out citations, there must be a law somewhere.
Here in TX, the tollways are not controlled by DOT. regulated by them, yes, but they are controlled privately. the only laws are regarding payment of fees
It's Virginia dude they are as bad or worse than California in many ways! It's just like the way they can add on several thousand dollars to a traffic ticket. It just doesn't pay to even visit that state let alone live there.
